Simple Recording

Post by arinahum »

I just purchased a Nord Grand. I am looking for a simple way to record myself for the sole purpose of practicing. So just listening to what I have just played - maybe once or twice - in order to critique it and then being done with it. My old keyboard had an internal record mechanism that could store a few tracks, but the Grand does not seem to have that function and the MIDI route seems unnecessarily complicated for this purpose.

Is there a simple way to do this on the Nord Grand?

Hi, and welcome-

There is no on-board recording feature in the Nord Grand, so you will need to connect it to a DAW or other kind of recorder/sequencer.

The absolutely simplest way is to use your smartphone. Many phones nowadays have a surprisingly good recording quality, a couple years ago when one of my bandmates got a last-generation (at that time) iPhone, I stopped bringing my Zoom digital recorder to practice because amazingly, the iPhone recordings were simply better.

The weak point of a smartphone is sound reproduction, such tiny speakers will inevitably sound weak and with no bass. But you can listen back on headphones or send the file to your computer.

If you do not have a DAW, and want something easy to use, Audacity is free software where you can do stereo recording. I have cheap mixer with USB out (Allen and Heath Zed 10x). Use it for practice and basic demos. I found Audacity easy to use and some great You Tube videos to help. Best of luck!

Another option is to take your mobile phone and use the video recording feature, placed however you like it, perhaps with a tripod. Not as pristine from an audio standpoint, though it works pretty well. I usually make YouTube videos this way, just demonstrating sounds and songs.

Yet another option would be to use a small Zoom H-series recorder, using either its surprisingly good internal stereo mics, or grab an appropriate patch cable and use line outs/ins if your environment is less than quiet.
