Occasionally missing tones in the left hand (split mode)

Post by MacAlex76 »

Hello everyone,

since I unfortunately couldn't find anything, that matches my problem using the search function, apart from that I am and I'm not very good at English either, I'll describe my problem and hopefully someone can tell me something enlightening about it:

I've been playing a Nord Piano 5 73 with the latest firmware for about half a year now. Even before the last firmware update and unfortunately now also after, it happens from time to time, that when I use a piano sound on the right and a bass sample on the left hand in split mode, one of the pressed keys doesn't make any sound. Unfortunately, it often sounds like you played something wrong oder forgot to press a key. Unfortunately It happens absolutely randomly and cannot be reproduced!

Now that I have already installed the latest firmware, I suspect that the Fatar TP 40 is not working as accurately as it should. The playing feel is far better than the TP 100 from my Nord Stage 2ex 76, I also have, but the best playing feel is worth nothing if you can't hear every tone you have definitely pressed on the keyboard. To make sure that I didn't get a bad device by stock, I went back to my dealer and played two more NP 5s for hours. Guess what? The same problem occurred on both devices. Especially with fast accented complex groove basslines but sometimes just with a simple chromatic run playing in a medium tempo. I really hope I'm not the only one with this problem and wondering if anyone may have a solution in mind.

Thanks for your answers in advance!

Cheers

Sounds strange and I’ve never experienced such an issue.
Could you perhaps share here the specific program/patch where you have the problem, so that other users could try to reproduce it?

It‘s not a special patch, just do a split with Piano Section in the upper keys and some sample sound e.g. a bass sample in the lower keys and it will happen sometimes when playing with both hands simultaneously.

Could it be that maybe the Sample Symth bass sound that you use a Mono sound and you press more than 1 key, sometimes (not sure how NP5 manages priority in Mono mode, though)?

As a Nord Piano 5 user, I can say that I have not yet encountered the problem described on my device (OS V 1.24), even when playing faster in split mode (BASS/PIANO).

In mono mode, the Nord Piano 5 always plays the last note pressed, even if you press two keys at the same time. In my experience, sounds don't drop out, even in mono mode.

Thanks for confirmation, I thought it was the case (Last Note Priority), on the other hand the OP wrote one of the pressed keys doesn't make any sound and that he experienced the same problem on other NP5s at the shop (quite unlikely if it was a HW issue on his), so it seems he is expecting to play more than 1 key/note at a time on the Bass part and not realizing how Mono mode works (maybe? Just trying to guess.) or not pressing the keys deep enough to properly trigger the note (i.e. reach the bottom sensor) when playing fast passages or...

No, it's not a monophonic issue, all bass samples I use for that are polyphonic samples. And I also press all keys deep enough to trigger the note. When these single note dropouts happen, you can hear a "clonk" instead, caused by the attack of the hammer action transferred to the metal body of the nord, just like I would play the key, having the volume turned off.
For you guys to know, I am a well trained professional piano player, playing stage pianos and synthesizers for more than 30 years now, and I never experienced something like that before. Even not with my Nord Stage 2ex, which I also have and use.
If none of you has ever noticed anything like I did, I guess I have to contact nord directly, in order to get some help.

Could it be that you have transposed the sample beyond its sample start or end point?

Good point but no, I'm sorry. To get this clear: The dropouts aren't concerning special notes. They happen with random notes/keys. When playing a tune it is working fine in 99% of the time, but somehow suddenly one note is missing and in the next bar it is ok again for the next 10 times, or 1000 times. Unfortunately, this issue is not reproducible.
