NP5 - Auto Power Off

Postby Wolfgang T » 19 Jul 2021, 18:37

As I am new to the Nord family with my Nord Piano 5, I would like to ask whether there is an AUTO POWER OFF function or how it works with the Clavia Nord pianos.

(Unfortunately I couldn't find anything related to this in the manual ...)

Hey Wolfgang, no Auto Power Off, being a Stage Piano model so primarily intended for Live usage it is not something they usually include (and with "they" I mean in general so also non-Nord brands/models)

 Thank you MAXPIANO for your quick reply !

 Actually, I am very surprised that the Clavia Nord does not have an integrated “auto power off function” in their models. All of my previous premium Stage pianos with 73 keys, such as the Yamaha CP 73 and the Korg SV2 had this useful function :!:

There will probably be different ideas about what's useful or not. As maxpiano already indicated: For a stage piano, a function that will shut your piano off between soundcheck and concert or within a short break will probably not be perceived as very funny by a large number of people. Even if a Nord will boot in less than a minute.
I'm playing in churches for example. Wouldn't want to turn on the instrument for every single song that comes up between prayers or sermons.
Other manufacturers may think different about that. I'm glad it doesn't exist on a Nord or my other instruments.
Stage 3 Compact (Rev.B 2.1 - OS 2.60) - Kawai VPC1 / Yamaha CP33 - Hall of Fame & NeoVent2 - Behringer Flow-8 - K&M stands 18820+18811 / 18953+18952 - Samsung tablet with MobileSheetsPro & AirTurn Duo200 - QSC K8.2s / Fischer InEars

 The “Auto Power off” function has meanwhile become the “industry standard”.

 All well-known brands such as Yamaha, Korg, Kurzweil etc. have implemented this function.
Unpleasant incidents or problems with this function can be avoided, as you can determine exactly after how many hours or minutes the Stage Piano will switch off.

Yes, you made me curious and I see that Auto Power Off seems to be more and more common also on stage DPs lately (I never noticed that as it is not a function I'd use), however it is not in all cases fully configurable, for example Yamaha CP88/73 (a direct competitor of Nord Pianos) have the Auto Power Off function, but it is either Enable=30mins or Disable=Off (and the factory default is Disable), on Korg SV2 it is either 2hrs (fixed) or Off.

In any case, for Nord to implement that function would most likely require also some HW change (since today the On/Off control is 100% hardware based = power supply physical switch only) and not just an OS update, so in my opinion it is extremely unlikely it will be implemented on existing models.

As a workaround, if this function is critical for you, you may use a timer plug (countdown type, e.g. Ansmann AES1), not exactly the same of course as it will not detect if you are playing or not, but at least will switch the keyboard off after a determined amount of time that you can set with some degree of freedom.

My "Power off" on the Stage 3 is a plug I'm pulling while done. Or a special connection plug board with overvoltage protection. But indeed, I already happened to leave it on over night. Which was my fault.

Still wouldn't want that sort of feature. I'm the sort of guy who regrets not to get a car any more without thousands of auto-XY features.

2 hours would be OK, though - as long as that mechanism can't get broken.

Even if the Korg Kronos is not a stage piano but a workstation, it should be mentioned here that the auto power function can be set for quite any number of hours. (See attached photo)

Since I forgot to set the “auto power off” function on one of my last stage pianos (Korg SV2), and the device with the built-in tube ran for many hours after a rehearsal and was almost destroyed, I have now become very careful and appreciate the auto power function very much !

Incidentally, the Korg Grandstage also has the “auto power off” function, whose basic setting is 4 hours, see enclosed photo.
