Nord Piano as an alternative to a Kawai CA 99

Postby hanan32 » 14 Jul 2021, 00:10

I've been waiting for almost 8 months for a Kawai CA 99, and there is no delivery data in sight
The shop owner offered I purchase a Roland LX if I don't want to continue waiting, I've decided against this (partly because of online reviews, and also because or Roland's additional height).
During the last few days I've been having second thought regarding the form-factor, namely getting a high end portable piano instead of a massive 80+kg furniture.
I am not a great pianist, but the key action is important to me, so I am looking for a portable with a keybed/key action which is on-par with the CA 99.
Regarding the sound, I have heard terrific reviews about the CA 99 wooden transducer, but since the piano is going to be placed in a rather small room I do not think there will be a large when compared with high quality monitor speakers, e.g. Nord piano monitors (I can't tell for sure, as the sound in a large shop is very different).

Ignoring the price, would you recommend the any of the Nord pianos (4, 5, Grand) as an alternative for a large stationary digital piano?

Another question, I do not see bluetooth midi connection listed in the specs of any of the Nord pianos. I would like to use a tablet with music apps, and naturally, I do not want to connect the tablet with a cable. Has anyone used a bluetooth midi adapter? which model of adapter? is it working ok?

Hi and welcome.

I don’t know the Kawai you mention but the Nord Grand has a Kawai keybed that feels fantastic (I use it now despite my first use of a Nord Piano 3 this my outdated user name…).

You say you’re not a “great” keyboard player. If you’re looking PRIMARILY for great piano sounds, and a decent form factor for travel, a Nord Piano 3, 4, or 5 might be more suitable than the Grand only because the Grand is bulkier even though not much heavier - the Grand has a fantastic key feel. All have the same piano library and for my money, there isn’t a better library in such a format. All other digital pianos sound over-engineered and plastic to me - the Nord library of grand and uprights sounds true to their nature - the best recorded samples to my ears. Anyone’s mileage may vary here but that’s my $0.02.

I don’t know if people would want to use a Bluetooth connection to other music tools due to pretty noticeable and intolerable delays.

Others with deeper expertise will chime in but hope this helps for starters.

Hello hanan32

and a very warm welcome to this wonderful forum of nord enthusiasts. You‘ll always get good help and ideas here.

As far as your MIDI bluetooth point is concerned I‘ve tried the YAMAHA MD-BT01 and a similar one from Quicco and must say that the latency, the delay of signal transmission, was too large. It is fast enough for e. g. program changes or sysex data but not for real time playing. Maybe this is also the reason for nord not spending the money for including it.

Have fun and cheers from Germany
