Nord Grand Piano Auto power off

Post by gtl92 »

Hello

I am looking for information on several forums for an auto power off function or the existence of an easier access for on/off switch.
With the piano in front of a wall, the power off button is difficult to access.
I thought I saw that it was recommended to turn off the piano regularly (every day ..) as well as the audio speakers.
I know that I can add a power strip with an on / off button, but if auto power off exists could be great , it could also limit the number of cables.

thanks for the help
G.

If the on/off button in the grand piano is located in the same place as the NS2, you can switch it on and off easily if you reach the switch guiding your hand from under the keyboard.
Or leave it switched on and cut the power from the wall socket.

The on/off button is easily reached from under the Grand, depending on what the Grand is on. I have the Nord Wood Stand and I can easily turn it on and off from underneath.

I have found it helpful to use a hole punch on colored peel-off labels to create a couple of small dots which I line up on the visible parts of my NG to guide my hand to the back when reaching for the power switch.

This isn't the first time I read something that implies that quite a number of users consider normal practice to not almost "ever" turn off their keyboard, or at least to do so just once in a while.

I turn it off after every use and I even unplug it from the main during night time, not even thinking about it because I have always taken for granted this is what you do. Am I doing this wrong?

I always turn my NG off when I am finished playing. I reach from the top...took a few tries to know where to reach. I use the Nord wood stand so can’t reach from the bottom. I also turn off the monitors (which are not the Nord monitors) because in the user manual (I think) it said to turn on the keyboard, then turn on the monitors, being careful to have the volume turned down. Outside the NG, I am not the most obedient person, but when it comes to this keyboard, I am very obedient. I don’t want problems...especially sound problems.

I always switch off all my instruments and connected gear after use mainly to save energy, and also switch off the powerboard when I am away for a longer period of time - this became a kind of automatic behavior to me and I can’t see any reason why to do it different

To play the Devil's advocate, I guess an argument for never switching it off would be to avoid tension spikes to the power supply, if this makes any sense. I've heard, anecdotally, that some valuable piece of electronics from the past is actually always kept on to avoid this problem.

Hmm in theory I would agree that this maybe a risk but then the question is why to have a power switch at all, this is like an advise not to touch the keys of the keyboard because it might happen that the sensors are getting damaged - you then might better want to buy the Nord and immediately put it into a showcase to avoid any damage from the intended use case

Well but that's not quite the same thing. :D The fact that there's a power switch per se doesn't imply that the optimal way to use it is to switch it on and off everytime we use the instrument. Just like the light switch in a room, despite being there "to be used", isn't supposed to be flickered on and off repeatedly.

If it turns out it's better not to switch off the board for X amount of hours between practice sessions, well I'd start doing that. :) (The impact on power consumption is mimal at best...) The problem is that I have no idea wheter this is really a thing and whether there IS a consensus on how many hours those X hours should be.
