Hello there,
since I unfortunately recently returned my Nord Grand because of a buzzing transformer and OLED display I started (again) the comparison between the Grand and Piano 5.
First of all - I really like the sound and keybed /action of the Nord Grand. Therefore I have no concern about that. And I'm almost sure that the Grand is the right instrument for me.
BUT
The one thing that bothers me is the lack of features of the Nord Grand compared to the Piano 5 - meaning the double piano layer and bigger sample storage (512MB vs 1GB).
Can anybody please give me some feedback about how good the keybed / action of the Piano 5 is compared to the Grand?
Since the Nord Grand was released in Mid 2019 do you guys think there will be a Nord Grand 2 / facelift version this year?
I know that there is no right or wrong answer to my questions / considerations but I would appreciate it if some of you guys would share your thoughts about that.
What makes me a little 'nervous' about buying the grand right now is that there grand isn't available f.e. thomann.de and they just changed the estimated availability from this week to up to 5-7 weeks from now on.
Which maybe indicates that there could be a new version in the next weeks. 5-7 weeks from now on is pretty close to the Namm 2022 - but anyway that's more a 'reading tea leaves'-thinking approach rather hard facts.
If my former Nord Grand hadn't those stupid buzzing transformer sounds I would rather enjoy the instruments instead of thinking about these (annoying) questions. But here I am so sorry if I maybe annoy some of you guys with my questions.
Since we talking about high quality level instruments and also high level prices (yes i know a real grand costs way more ...) thats my thoughts for the last days - so any advice or just sharing your thoughts would be appreciated.
Thank you

Re: Nord Grand or Piano 5 or keep waiting - Advice needed
The grand was announced in Feb 2019, and released a few months later. I really doubt there will be a replacement this year, especially with COVID in-between that had to restrict development a lot. Even keyboards like the newer Wave 2 haven’t had a software update in over 18 months.
I guess if 512MB vs 1GB was a dealbreaker I could see waiting, but if you love the keybed action and the sounds I think you know what you should do…

I would go for the NP5 as it has the most updated features and seriously doubt it will be replaced by a NP6 for years. The action on the Grand is a little better, though if you had unfavorable reviews of this instrument before, maybe try a different one.

Re: Nord Grand or Piano 5 or keep waiting - Advice needed
Ive been waiting for a Nord Grand since January and now Im told they wont be available until 'at least' June. So, I wouldnt be at all surprised if something is in development. Transferring the Piano 5 functionality to the Grand would be relatively straightforward I would have thought and is an obvious upgrade.
Id be very surprised if any major new products were being developed. Honouring backorders and catching up after Covid would be a priority I would have thought.
Id appreciate some news as to what is being produced at the Nord Factory. There is very little of any Nord products available in the UK right now.

Re: Nord Grand or Piano 5 or keep waiting - Advice needed
I said it long ago from december that my information directly from clavia nord is that no one will get stock for nord grand before july..
Thomann.de and musicstore.com are refrshing their estimated delivery times every month.. they get wrong information from their distributor every time.. because both of them thomann and musicstore are buying from the german distributor not directly from clavia nord..
Now as for the grand i have 1 nord grand and 1 nord stage 3 .. the grand bought from thomann b stock. It had 1 key which wasnt coming back fast like the others propably it had a bit more grease under in the mechanic key parts but during time playing its fixxed by itself. the good part for me is that thomann is awesome and they advice me to send it back and get an A stock when they get a stock.. i told them that my info is that no one will get stock before july and they told me that they doubt etc and that their distributor told them at 8 of February they will have stock which ofc didnt happen.. so they let me keep the b stock until 8 february.. but when no stock for them in that date they expanded me the keeping of the instrument.. so as time passed we are now at untill 11 of april to keep the instrument and now i will call them again to expand me more time because they dont have a stock.. the awesome thing is that even if they get a stock and exchange it with the b stock and some small price difference i will still have the 30 days money back warranty.. so if this thing go untill july we might see something comes from nord so i can change my plans..
You can check my small review about keybed of nord grand vs stage 3 88..
As for the piano 5 it has a fatar keybed which i dont like very much.. heavier ofc in action compared to stage 3.. compared to grand i would still choose grand in the feeling action is awesome.. i just didnt like the quality .. the keys are not tight enough compared to stage 3 and the keys also have a strange space between them.. just check my video and you will understand.. this quality cons for me are unacceptable.. because its a lot expensive instrument and it should be perfect in these details about keybed etc..
As for the next nord instrument i also wish to be a grand 2 and be in time to change my order from the grand to grand 2..
But the reality going closer for nord stage 3 ex or electro 7 as a next nord instrument..
My prediction is stage 3(2017) just because its the flagship and it has less synth memory (480mb) while a cheaper piano 5(2021) has 1gb synth memory..
From the electro side .. electro 6(2018) is the only nord that left with 1gb piano memory.. so its possible that we see a stage 3 ex this year with 3gb piano memory and 1gb synth (plus a new piano sound also at summer) and electro 7 2023 with 2gb piano memory and a grand 2 at 2024.. or something like that
Namm show is at june 2022 so in around 70-90 days we will have our answer if nord will give new instrument or not

Thank you very much M1tsos for your insight / information on re-stocking grand units by nord.
I've already watched your video on comparing nord stage 3 vs grand. I had a similar experience with my b-stock grand unit regarding the slight different spaces between some separate keys.
I agree with you - at this price point - it is a bit disappointing. On the other hand if the Piano 5 uses a Fatar keyboard and it is harder to press or lets say not that easy as the grand I'll go for the grand.
The Yamaha GHS on my MODX8 is ok but in summary for me its just a solid 'meh' (compared to the grand the GHS feels imprecise, harder to press and a bit slippery)
Despite the fact on missing some new features of the piano 5 - Piano layering would be nice but since I play primarily jazz, blues piano songs - for me it's just a 'nice to have' feature but it is not really dealbreaker.
Maybe I'll keep my MODX8 for some time to see if I really have a need for layering other sounds at all. But I often lose myself in clicking through all sounds instead of really using / playing them.
I mainly play piano sounds on my MODX8 and compared to the grand the yamaha piano sounds are really unsatisfying (just to be clear my intention was to use / play other sounds as well but I'm 'stuck' with jazz/blues/swing songs because of that I depend on solid piano sounds).
Since I had the grand b-stock unit for around two weeks I really fell in love with it. At first I thought 'what a useless overpriced instrument'. After one or two hours playing around I completely fell in love with the grand. It is what is - just an ordinary stage piano but somehow Nord succeeds in making something different - at least it works for me.
Sure it is not perfect but it is miles away from being a total disaster as some buyer / tester claim it to be. I also think some people strongly disagree with my opinion but its fine. Thats the reason why there are so many different brands and manufacturer out there so that everyone can find the personal 'right choice'. As always buying an instrument ss a very subjective decision for everyone to make.
But as you guys know we all want to have the maximum possible value / quality for our hard earned money therefore I maybe lost my focus on what I really want / need.
Today I ordered my new grand (which was the last one at kirstein.de - no b-stock). I decided not to wait until July or even longer because my current gear lacks sound and keybed action quality which is kind of frustrating (yeah I know first world problems). My goal is to take the next step in playing piano so I really need an instruments which fulfills my needs. And if there really will be a new grand version in the next month - so be it.
Thank you everybody for sharing your thoughts (and time) on my topic

First of all congratulations i am glad that you decided to buy the grand
For all the rest I agree with you.. i also love the grand i just wish it had better quality keybed.. this space and no tight keybed makes me feel unsecure unsafe about the reliability and if it will be able to last long for years.. and its damn 3400 euros which is extremely hard to collect at 2022… while the kawai mp7 is 1400 euros and has the same keybed…
I also love when i playing the grand and to be honest it makes me not like to play piano at all at stage 3 and use it just for hammond rhodes wurlitzers etc etc..
But in the end my friend i still dont know what to do… keep the grand or not?? I can live with stage 3 also but if i send it back and get my money back i am 100% sure that will miss the grand

For me accepting MODX8 as a replacement for the Nord Grand wasn't working.
The Kawai MP-7 SE is also an excellent instruments and as you wrote about 50% cheaper compared to the grand. I think sound wise the MP-7 SE is maybe more flexibel in its usage because you can choose more different sounds f.e. organ sounds. Have you tested the MP-7 SE?
Before I ordered my first (returned) Nord Grand I originally was in the market for a Yamaha Montage 8. But it wasn't available for some time. So I searched for alternatives. Then I slowly realized I want a solid piano sound. Took me quite some time to understand what the differences are between Nord, Roland, Korg, Yamaha etc. I've compared endless videos with reviews or just sound example for a lot of different instruments.
Suddenly I found my self comparing VSTs but besides the great sounds from Keyscape or PianoTeq I prefer a physical instruments which I can just switch on start playing and also have full control over all effects and settings via physical buttons. Also the problem with software can be (but don't have to be) that a software that you buy today maybe doesn't work in 5 years anymore or you have to pay additional money to use it on newer in 5 year existing operating systems. Sure you can install a virtual machine but I think you get my point here. Also you still need a (high) quality midi controller which also cost around 1000 EUR. Still leaves the question open how good a specific midi controller can control a VST compared to a 'normal' stage piano. Finally you also need a capable laptop / computer. In sum for me thats to many possible or necessary workarounds.
So I started comparing stage pianos again.
MP-11 SE also sounds good but 30 kilograms is a bit to heavy. Btw yesterday I found a youtube video where the owner completely disassembled his instruments - which is cool that this is possible to do - but at some point in the video you can see the wear on the keys which shocked me a little bit (look on the front of the key - you can see by the reflection the wear of the keys https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yMpa43cNlJ0&t=283s at time index 4:43, just in case the link doesn't work correct). I don't know if this is typical for this instrument or maybe the user plays way to much But I get your concerns on reliability. Thats why I ordered at kirstein.de because they offer an extended 3 year warranty same as thomann.de (also 30 days time to return).
Sound wise I think the MP-11 SE sound a bit damped and a bit more artificial but thats my very subjective point of view. Nevertheless the piano sounds a still very good compared to many other stage pianos.
The Yamaha CP88 / YC88 piano sound wasn't an option for me because the piano samples are almost the same as the ones on the MODX8. Don't know about the keybed action but I on basis of some reviews the keybed should be fine.
Roland RD-2000 wasn't available so no option also the piano sounds for me are just ok.
The Korg SV-2S is on a technical view a great instrument but for me the design is really a no go. It also wasn't available.
Then I spotted the Nord Grand b-stock unit on thomann.de and I just gave it a try. Which was regarding to financial side a expensive decision since I'm now 'stuck' with the Nord Grand
I think the question for you to answer is - what is your personal use case and must-haves for a stage piano and if you can accept the flaws on the Nord Grand compared to the high price.
It took me quite some time to answer that for me as you can see. But at this price a profound 'stage piano research' could/should be reasonable

I agree in almost everything with you.. first of all the kawai mp7 is 1/3 of nord grands price and even a bit less 1444 euros
The mp11 is 34kg so its not an option at all
My biggest concern is the keybed.. i want the best possible the closer possible to real piano keybed that can be able to move it by 1 person… at my small internet research i found out that 3 keybeds are best around this moment
1st is the kawai mp11 (34kg)
2nd is the kawai vpc1 ( 30kg )
3rd is the kawai mp7 (22.5kg) or nord grand (20.9kg)
So since weight is also a priority together with quality and sounds i choosed the nord grand..
I also check out the idea of midi master keyboard together with my stage 3 so i made some small search for studiologic sl88 grand 777 euros (20.8kg) which has fatar wood keys.. but i see a lot of complaining in the reviews about the whole keybed and instrument which made me not even try to test it..
As i already said i like nord grand much.. and i will take my time to think it over and over again untill i decide what to do..
Thanks a lot for your info and answers

Re: Nord Grand or Piano 5 or keep waiting - Advice needed
Hi there,
I'm new to this forum! I'm actually in a quite similar situation myself, trying to decide what to buy with so many choices out there!
I currently have a Nord Electro 3 HP which I really really love and a Yamaha P-125 which I also really like for the piano sounds (but really hate the keybed action, feels too unnatural for my needs!)
I'm considering to sell my NE3 HP for either a NE5/6 HP for the added functionalities that the new models come with; however the dillema I'm currently facing is that I also need a keyboard with a really good, responsive & realistic keybed as possible (something that the Nord Electro series doesn't offer me)
So another option would be to sell my NE3 HP (and potentially my Yamaha P125) for a brand new NP5 88 which comes with great pianos/EPs, layering capabilities, larger memory etc + a better keybed!
But then again, I keep reading how the NP5 comes with the standard Fatar keybed, which apparently is quite mediocre (haven't tried it myself though, so wouldn't know much) compare to other stage pianos with similar price tag
So this makes me question whether it's actually worth investing on NP5, where I could go with the final option of just STAYING with my NE3 HP and replace my P125 with a better action keybed (e.g Kawai MP7SE, Korg SV2-88, Yamaha CP88 etc) - with roughly the same money as I would spend on replacing my NE3 with NP5 - but also keeping the organ sound of the NE3, which I've used sparingly and might even regret giving up!
Another option i guess would be to keep my NE3 and replace the P125 for NP5 which would give me the better keybed benefit...and 2 Nords! but that might just be too expensive...
Any thought on the above?? Do you think keeping my NE3 for a couple of more years i a sensible thing to do, or would it be good timing now to try and replace it with something better?
Thanks!
