No sound from Monitors using VST

Hello,

I recently tried playing VST like kontakt instruments through the Nord grand with monitors, without using an audio interface, I can’t seem to get any sound coming out the monitors, I only get sound from the monitors if i hit a key in the kontakt interface using the mouse.

Is there a way to solve this problem?

If you can get sound from your VST by hitting the note on the screen with your mouse, then the audio connection exists. (Since you're not using an interface in your computer, I guess you've got your monitors connected to its headphone out?) This leads me to believe you may be looking in the wrong places for your solution, i.e. the problem isn't that you can't get audio out of your VST, but rather, you're having trouble getting MIDI from your Nord to the VST in the first place.

As anotherscott said, you need to check the MIDI settings both in Kontakt (select Nord Grand MIDI port as "Port A" in Kontakt preferences and ensure you have Port A + OMNI or Ch 1 on the pluign pnael you loaded in Kontakt) and on the Nord Grand itself (what MIDI Channel is set in System menu?).

Of course if Nord Monitors are connected to the Nord Grand and not to teh computer, you will not hear the VST sound from them but from the computer speakers, so I also assume you have connected them to the computer headphones output (otherwise you need an audio interface, because USB of Nord Grand only transports MIDI, not Audio)

If they are connected to the Nord Grand they will never play VSTis from the computer, USB on NG is MIDI only, not audio as we already said... you need an audio interface and connect the NG to its inputs, Nord Monitors to its outputs and use it also as output card for the VSTis.

Except he said he DOES hear the VST through the monitors when he plays it directly from the computer with the mouse.

So my guess is he's got the headphone out of the computer (since there's no interface) going into the Monitor In of the Nord, which would allow his monitors to play both the Nord sound and the VST sound. Otherwise, as you suggest, I see no way he could EVER have heard his VST from the monitors.

You mean the Nord is set on channel 1? Have you confirmed that your VST is set to receive on channel 1?

How is your Nord sending MIDI to your computer? Through a USB cable? Is your computer Windows or Mac?

I plugged the Nord grand to my MacBook Pro and the studio monitors to the Nord grand. I set the Nord to channel 1 and the midi channel on kontakt to omni on the kontakt setting options only allows you to select CoreAudio for driver and built-in for device

Can you confirm that the headphone out of your Macbook is plugged into the Monitor In on your Nord? I assume it is, otherwise as I said, I don't know how you EVER could have heard your VST out of the monitors (even just using the mouse), but I'm just double-checking, in case you're misremembering what you heard or have changed some wiring at some point.

And getting back to an earlier question, when you say you've plugged the Nord Grand into your Mac, did you do that by plugging a USB cable directly between the Nord and the Mac? With no additional hub, interface, or adapter of any sort in between?

Yeah it’s plugged into the MacBook using the usb cable, no headphones used just USB port
