No audio output until restart

Postby Pmalcolm » 22 Feb 2022, 06:22

So after playing the Nord Grand for about 1 hour or so the audio output just cuts out but the keyboard is still on. Once I power down and restart sound is back. It is on firmware 1.60. Does anyone else have this problem?

Did a factory reset and then flashed the firmware again.

Left Line out>>to DI>>to soundcraft ui24 mixer (XLR)

Thank you for your input!

Hi, do you have any pedal connected to CTRL Pedal input? If "yes", have you tried to disconnect it and see if it still happen?

Hi Pmalcolm, Welcome to the Forum!
Sorry that you're having this problem.

If this occurs again, please check the following and let us know what you find:
1. Do you still have audio on the headphone output?
2. After the audio cuts out from the Left Line Out, connect an amp or monitor to the Right Line Out and see if signal still exists there.
3. If there is Right channel output in #2, disconnect the DI box and connect the Left channel to the amp/monitor.

Good luck and I hope you get the problem resolved soon.

Thank you for the response. There is no audio on the right channel either but I haven't tried the headphone yet. Will let you know the results with the headphone..

To trouble shoot a signal path problem it's best to follow the signal from one end or the other to find the point (or points) where you lose signal. The question is: Has the Nord stopped outputting audio or has something in the signal chain stopped?

How did you determine no audio on the right channel? Did you connect it directly to a monitor/amp or to the same DI box Mixer/Audio interface chain? If you don't have a amp or monitor available, connect the headphone to the Left channel or right channel and see if audio is present.

You should also be aware that Nords have known audio interactions with their USB ports. If your setup connects the Nord's USB to the same computer connected to other devices in the audio path, it might be introducing an unexpected audio path that might be causing the issue.

Also, I see the mixer has combo inputs. You might want to try eliminating the DI box and go straight from the Nord to the combo inputs to see if that works differently.

The symptom of loss of signal after 1hour of operation to me suggests either something is overheating (causing some protection mechanism to engage) or there's a leakage path that's eventually changes the DC reference level for one of the devices in the signal path causing it to move out of its operating range. Do you have a ADC capture (audio recording) of the signal cutting out from your audio interface? If the signal degrades before it cuts out, it might provide some clues to which is happening. If available, please post a capture of the signal cutting out and the audio from few minutes preceding the cutout.

Hi,
I had a similar problem with my Nord piano 4. After a few iminutes of use, I lost the audio signal on the right channel. I called my retailer and had to return it for repair.

Thank you PTERM for your suggestions. The NORD stopped outputting audio. The DI is working because I plugged other instruments into it and it works perfectly. Also am too far away from the mixer to run just a 1/4" in. There is no USB connections and no ADC capture card at all. Called Nord and they have to send it to a repair facility as you have said it is possibly a voltage/heating issue. Thank you so much for the help so far. Will keep you updated on the outcome.

Hi Pmalcolm,
Good work isolating the problem to the Nord. Sorry to hear that it was the problem.
I look forward to seeing your updates. -- I always appreciate when people report their outcomes. It makes the thread more valuable to anyone experiencing similar issues in future.

BTW, I looked at the soundcraft ui24 mixer website - it appears to be able to act as an Audio Interface/Recorder so I think it contains the ADCs I referred to. Sorry for the confusion if I misunderstood its capabilities. It looks like an excellent piece of equipment!

I hope the fix goes quickly and is covered by the warranty.
Best regards,
