So the wave file would be 73 notes of 8 seconds with gaps in between? Or every note just being the 12 notes in one octave and the sampler then transposed it to the rest of the keyboard?

That question is somewhat surprising. Of course, you may leave out some notes that would be transposed by NSE4: But it wouldn't be a good idea to sample all notes of one octave and then spread the samples over the full keyboard - just imagine recording a violin and transpose it 2 octaves down: It wouldn't sound like a double bass. If you want to save space and time, rather sample every 3rd note over the full keyboard range and just transpose neighbouring notes.

On the other hand: You are going to produce nsmp4 samples for your NP5. Which support a round robin mechanism. Would a mellotron sound benefit from multiple samples for round robin? Probably not so much... I'm not sure. That would be an interesting question to me. If so, just duplicate the middle range of the given sound type where you play most of the time to save space.

As it turned out, I didn't have time to make any samples as I sold the Mellotron and had to get it in the post right away.

I'll make do with what comes with the P5 and hope for a speedy release of the next sample library.

You could sample a free Mellotron virtual instrument, as a temporary solution, for example Plogue Sforzatron (a free bank for their Sforzando .sfz soundfont player, based on actual Mellotron samples, you can find it in this page https://www.plogue.com/products/sforzando-banks.html)

That's a great idea, I hadn't considered sampling from a software instrument.

I actually have managed to download a bunch of Mellotron samples from a couple of different sources so I think that will keep me busy until such time that the Sample Library 4 becomes available.

So my Piano 5 arrived today.

I have not had much time with it yet, and of course my fears were realised and there is an issue with the keyboard.

I'm basically getting the same issue that this guy has https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oUHPvHwYB9M

A clicking noise on two of the keys. Pretty devastated given the cost of this, not sure what to do as it came from Germany and I am in Australia - not sure I'll get any support from the local distributor. Worth trying to send back?

I made a video and uploaded it to Imgur but the audio isn't there for some reason so maybe I'll try uploading it some other way so you guys can see.

The audio needs to be turned up a bit but I think you can hear the clicking clearly enough on the A and Bb keys. The Bb is not terrible but the A is noticeable enough to make playing not enjoyable. Sucks because otherwise everything else seems to work great.

I can't hear enough difference between any of the keys' action sounds to be bothered about it, but perhaps my ears or my sound system aren't sufficiently hi fi to make that possible.

If there is still a long wait time for P5 deliveries in your location perhaps you can sell yours for as much - or more - than you paid for it. The new owner may be thrilled to get it, even with the action sounds you described. Then you could either take a chance on another new P5 or perhaps you could find a different brand/model stage piano at a music store where you can listen to the action before you buy the same unit you played. My second choice for a new 73 key stage piano was the Korg Grandstage. It, like the P5, is available with either 88 and 73 key models and the actions of the two models are the same design.

Yes that A would highly bother me. That's not at all right for a brand new keyboard. Good luck on getting it sorted out.

It seems there are quality control issues with everything these days, no matter what the cost. You almost feel lucky if you buy something, anything, and there's nothing wrong with it. :-x

My AvantGrand, new last Feb. , has begun to develop a repetition issue in one of the keys. Luckily it's still under warranty and there's a Yamaha service guy that works on DPs in LA that will make a visit. But at 15K you don't expect a problem so soon. It's not like I'm playing the thing 4 hours a day.

Hi Dave,

Yeah it is a real bummer. I don’t think I am even an overly picky customer, I can deal with a blemish or scratch on a new product, nothing is perfect. But the clicking noise on this A key is enough to make playing it unbearable. Of course with headphones on I can’t hear it, and it sounds wonderful. I just think at 4K in I shouldn’t have this kind of problem.

Sorry to hear about your AvantGrand, as you say there seem to be a lot of quality issues these days. Weird thing is I have owned a couple of small home digital pianos from Yamaha and Korg and never had any problems with those, maybe it’s something to do with the types of keybeds.

Anyway, Thomann have been responsive so far. I hope they can perhaps get it repaired locally, sending it back is a pain.
