Grand OS Update v1.60

Postby 52-36 » 17 Dec 2021, 18:56

After a quick spin with the new OS update I have to say that NG feels more responsive. For me it’s like having a new instrument:-) Thank you Nord!

I also downloaded and installed the new OS for the Grand. As I do sometimes use the midi out to control something else, I’m wondering how to change the default keyboard touch going out (which is heavy) to light? I understand how to do it on the panel of the Grand obviously, but as this is a new change to the OS, there’s nothing I’m seeing in my user manual for this. Are there new instructions somewhere I may be missing? Or is it as simple as whatever setting I use on the panel is also driving the midi out? Thanks!!

v1.60 (2021-12-14)
- Adjustments to Piano KBD Touch curves (Heavy, Medium and Light) for increased dynamic control.
- Added MIDI Out Velocity Curve page to MIDI menu, with Heavy, Medium and Light options (Heavy is default).

(release notes, good to read before installing or after ;-) )

Is it a placebo effect or is the velocity curve for "Heavy" way easier to play than before? I was always struggling with the Imperial Grand on the Heavy curve and Royal 3D was simply not usable for me on the Heavy setting ... or did I get heavy hands all of a sudden?

Ok, I deserved the RTFM reply there. Thank you. Found it in the MIDI section…

If anyone else missed it - it’s SHIFT+PROGRAM3 button, 5th MIDI option.

I tryed the keyboard before and after to make a comparison. I would say the heavy is now more useable (it's now possible to hit higher velocities a little easier) but with the medium setting I feel like I had a wider range of possibilities before the update. I was able to play consistently softer than now. Strange move from nord on this... At least these are my feelings, don't know if someone can confirm

For my ability or playing style the new heavy setting replaces the old medium setting for most of my presets. I get way more dynamics from the newly tuned heavy setting than from any of the old settings.
I agree with your judgement about the new medium setting, it's more difficult now to get the full dynamic range from the medium setting now.
BTW I have no way to directly compare old and new velocity curves, my report is just based on playing OS v1.60 after playing the Nord Grand for over a year on the old velocity curves.

I don't like the new velocity curves. It feels like playing with a compressor. The old velocity curves were more dynamic to me. I have 3 Nord Grands and have played them since they came out.

At least Nord should make an option to chose the old velocity curves in the menu. Otherwise it will be a huge downer for early Nord Grand players, who love the original touch, when 1.61 and other firmware updates come out, giving new features, but forcing the new velocity curves out to everyone.

I love the feature for MIDI velocity curves, but I have downgraded to 1.54 to come back to the fantastic Nord Grand feel that I love to much.

Oh! Is it possible to downgrade? Me too I did like more the prior medium version because of the wider dinamic!

If you allow me to ask.. why you have 3 nord grands?? Isnt 1 enough??

I am planning to buy one too.. i have the stage 3 88 and the keybed feels very cheap and i am just proffesional musician( guitar ) and singer for many years and i have started piano for the last 8 months now.. with my very little playing experience i can feel that this fatar keybed of stage 3 doesnt worth the money we pay and i can feel in the playing that the action isnt good for real sensitive piano playing..
