Split!

Postby Andrusha » 03 Nov 2011, 12:58

Hi!
How to split keyboard and set different MIDI channels on parts? Is it available on Nord Piano? Anybody knows? I want to use Nord Piano and Access Virus rack in live shows.

Hello Andrusha,
Welcome to the forums!

Split is not a feature available on the Nord Piano.
However there is a way to do what you need to, with some additional equipment.

The MIDI Solutions Router has a split function which allows you to take a MIDI signal and split it between two midi outputs.

The way to use this would be to run the Nord Piano (NP) midi out to the router's midi input and then the Router's output 1 to the Virus rack, and the Router's output 2 back to the Nord Piano's midi input.

The "Local Off" function of the Nord Piano will need to be used so that notes played directly via the keyboard will NOT be played directly, but sent via midi, yet will be triggered via the incoming midi from the MIDI Solutions Router.

Cheers, Hanon

good point Hanon makes with his suggestion, might work to create splits!

But maybe there is an even simpler way(?): The Access Virus Rack should have a MIDI Thru Plug, so MIDI the Nord Piano's MIDI out to the IN of the Rack, and the THRU of the virus rack back to the IN of the Nord Piano.
If I'm not mistaken, this way it should give the same result as Hanons suggesttion, but please suggest me if I'm wrong!!

But then for Splits I am not sure what exactly you want for the moment and if having the local off and MIDI IN on the Piano will solve this?!

EDIT: Ah OK I got it, Hanon explained it to me: The device described above lets you set a quasi split point for the MIDI signals. THis is not possible with the MIDI thru obviously. Sorry for the confusion!

I'm trying to do a keyboard split with left hand bass on an Electro 3HP. I understand the Midi Solutions router method, but how would I have the bottom two octaves sent to the Virus rack and rest of the keyboard sent back into the Electro midi in?

You would, for example, connect the input of the router to the E3's MIDI out, connect the router's Out1 to the E3's MIDI in and connect the router's Out2 to the Virus' MIDI in. Then you'd program the MIDI Router (using the Windows utility) to send MIDI note values up your splitpoint (see the link below) to Out2 (the Virus) and send note values equal to or larger then your splitpoint to Out1, the Electro 3.

http://www.phys.unsw.edu.au/jw/notes.html

For example, if you want to use C3 as the splitpoint and send C3 and higher to the Electro, then you'd use a value of 48 (see the table linked above).

I haven't looked at their utility, although you can download it freely and check out how it works without having one of those MIDI Solutions routers. It is possible that you can select note values in their utility, instead of having to look them up in a table.

Hey, thanks so much for the reply. I didn't know that you could program the routers and it sounds like they memorize your program so you only have to do it once! I'm excited to try this out. I would want to have damper pedaling on the Electro and none on the bass part so I hope that's programable too.
My plan is to get a router and maybe a small module to set on the electro for bass sounds. Anyone else try this or have a module recommendation?

Hi

I tried out the Midi Solutions Router and it works great. I'm using a Roland XV-2020 module for basses and it's doing almost everything I wanted. The one problem is when I'm using organs, I don't get expression in the left hand, it's all the same volume and too loud. (I'm using an Electro 3 HP). When I select an organ sound, the Electro must not send any midi expression out of the bass section. I understand why, because as a real Hammond doesn't have touch sensitivity, but is there a workaround that I can try to make this work?
