There are people - like myself - who like to play with low volume at home. There's enough loudness in my other life (teaching and gigging).

Also, I am lucky to have a home studio in my cellar which has good acoustics and normally there's no disturbing noises. Furthermore, I don't like to use headphones at home. It would be just great to have a little more silent piano action with my Nord to fully enjoy playing within these circumstances. So I'd say that YES, it would be important improvement to have less noisy Nord Piano (My Stage2 does not make problem here, I just use it on stage).

But as said, those features Hanon listed are the reason why I tolerate this noisiness.

@ Hanon, you're right of course Hanon, don't get me wrong I love my Electro 3 to death.
It's just that for the price we pay one would expect better quality control.

Hello All,
Once again, just personal opinion here.
My point is; that keyboard actions have always had a degree of mechanical noise associated with them.
Every type of instrument with mechanics has some type of noise, trumpet valves, sax valve pads, even an acoustic grand piano has a significant amount of mechanical noise.
I'm hoping to understand when it became a reasonable expectation that a keyboard action not have any mechanical noise.
Fatar makes keybeds for so many different instrument manufacturers other than Clavia, yet Nord owners are the most vocal about noise complaints.
Is it just the keybeds that Clavia buys that are noisy?
Is there some special treatment that Young-Chang Kurzweil puts on the Fatar keybeds before shipping out their instruments?

Have a listen to the key noise artifact heard in the intro music of this clonewheel organ shootout video by Keyboard Magazine, I wonder which instrument was used to record this intro?

I too find this thread a bit perplexing as the only time I notice the keyboard noise is if I don't have any volume on. As soon as there's some volume all I can hear is the instrument sound. And it's not just mine that's unusually quiet, as my tutor's NP88 is probably quieter than mine. However, even if I could hear the keys I wouldn't mind due to the feel and sound. I do feel for those who have spent good money and are disappointed though.

Since I started the thread, I might as well add my thoughts to what’s been discussed.

I appreciate the responses from everyone. That’s why I joined the Forum to get a users consensus. At least I feel reassured that this is the way the keybed is made and I don’t have a faulty unit.

What is at issue here is not the Sound quality, Play-ability, User Interface, etc. etc. After all, we would not be here at the Nord Users Forum if we weren’t happy with its’ capabilities.

I am fortunate to also own a Roland RD700NX and a Yamaha S90XS. Both are excellent keyboards but I also wanted the positives that the Nord Piano offered.

All keyboards, no matter what make or price, have their strengths and weaknesses. The excessively noisy keybed is just a weakness that I as a new Nord Piano owner did not expect to be hearing.

I’ll repeat what I said in my first post. “I realize that all keyboards have key noise but this seems excessive.” I’m not expecting it to be “mechanically silent”.

The Roland and Yamaha both produce some noise but much less than the Nord.

I think JacksonP said it best in his excellent post. “So I have accepted the noisiness: there are so many good qualities so I decided to tolerate this unfortunate feature.”

Amen

P.S. Hanon, I haven’t received my “Welcome to the Forums” greeting:)

I'm sorry, that was just an oversight on my part, no offense intended.
I usually throw in the welcome if I'm the first responder.

hi folks,
although this thread is kinda old, let me add.

i sold my upright piano because i only get to play at night, after work. the piano could be heard two flats up and down. and its forbidden to play after 10pm anyway. now i thought i could play at night.

however, the keys are so noisy that the neighbors one flat up and the ones one flat down are greatly annoyed by the keyboard noises. its thumping them out of their beds. that's how loud it is and that's not irrelevant. i chose the nord because its the best, but i never thought it would bog me down on the reason why i switched to an electronic instrument in the first place.

cheers

Some buildings are not well noise-insulated, some neighbours like to complain about everything and some keyboards are very noisy, but I doubt the NS2 is one of them.
I do not think there are many options. What about putting a rubber mat + carpet under your piano stand to see if it makes it quieter?
In fairness, at night there is very little noise, so anything is easy to hear. Tell your neighbours that you are thinking of selling to piano to pay for trumpet and tap-dancing classes. :D

But it's a fact that the NS2 has a rather noisy keyboard compared to many of its competitors, e.g. NX700, CP4/CP5. Even my 15 year old P200 is quieter.
