Nord Rack 2x Performance Mode

Postby MikeT99 » 30 Nov 2018, 19:38

Hi all,

Just on the brink of buying an used Rack 2x, but puzzled on how Performance Mode is implemented MIDI-wise. As I see it (and please correct me if I'm wrong), ALL slots are always active, and you make the actual selection through MIDI, right? To put in detail:

- I have a MIDI controller keyboard capable up to four different MIDI channels on the keyboard (like a MIDI setup)
- Hooking up the NR2x, and selecting channels 2-5 to the 4 active slots, will I be able to ear the different sounds splitted across the keyboard? In the manual it remains the dreaded Leftmost Slot MIDI priority (Oh WHY DOES THIS EVEN EXISTS IN THE FIRST PLACE?!), but several users have reported it as beeing absent inthis encarnation of the Lead Rack.

This is of paramount importance to me. I need to be able to control it through MIDI to have access to splits. And no, the normal Lead isn't an option, I need to have my Programs/Performances in a airplane cabin-friendly form factor, and to get to the gig and just plug it to the locally rented MIDI controller. If it can't behave, or if the Leftomst, etc... still remains an issue, that will be a deal-breaker...

Thank you so much
Miguel

that is correct, the implementation is slightly different between keyed version and rack version. On keyed version a Slot will only be active when the LED is lit; on rack version all slots are ALWAYS active on their respective assigned midi channels.

Yes, I was aware of that, unfortunately, but thank you for confirming this.
Nevertheless, the question stands: is it possible to control it that way, that is, via MIDI channelling on the controller keyboard ?
Thanks

If your MIDI keyboard can split channels across keys (e.g. A0-A2 is channel 1, A#2 to A3 is channel 2, A#3 on up is channel 3) then the Nord Rack will obviously play the sound on channel 1 only for the keys which send channel 1 sounds, and the sound on channel 2 for only the second split range, etc. in this way you control which sound you're playing by the MIDI keyboard active channel and any splits the keyboard itself can create and send. The Rack will respect the correct sound on the correct channel at all times.

To further the concept - if you don't split, then you can choose which sound on the Nord you are actively playing via the keyboard by simply changing the keyboard channel to the channel assigned to whichever slot you want to play.

Thanks! I was hoping it would be as this, but really just fearing that “all slots also respond to the MIDI channel of the leftmost slot” nonsense, a real show-stopper.

I guess a NLr2x is on the way, then!
