Lead 2x going quiet

Hi There

Have a Nord Lead 2x and periodically patches spontaneously go quiet. To overcome the problem I need to change patch up & down and then it returns to normal. Almost as if VCA filter switches off.

Not an expert but any help appreciated

Do you have a PC or Mac with a MIDI interface? Because I'm wondering what the NL2X is sending out over MIDI when it goes quiet. If it is a controller on the NL2X, it will likely send out MIDI commands when this happens. If you were to connect it to a PC/Mac and ran some program to show/log MIDI input, you would be able to see this.

On a Mac you could use MIDI Monitor and on a PC MIDI-OX - both are free programs. Alternatively, if you have some DAW (such as Ableton Live, Logic, Cubase and probably also Garage Band) you could add the NL2X as a MIDI keyboard and record what it is sending, which should also show you if the NL2X is sending (for example) MIDI volume commands at times when you're not twiddling with the knobs.

If it isn't sending out MIDI commands, there might be a more serious problem.

Nothing connected to midi out.

Midi in is connected to a Roland Fantom which I do some sequencing from. Perhaps I should disconnect this to ensure nothing erroneus is being sent to the Nord

I agree.
A control change via midi is a possibility.

When disconnecting Midi will fix the troubles, then setting Midi Global to channel 16 could do the job too...
It appears to be always the solution to Midi troubles

Thanks Guys. Disconnected Midi connections however unfortunately problem still happens. Now I have an issue where I am struggling to get osc 2 light stable and it seems intermittent. I wonder if it was osc dying before hence going quiet.

Any ideas appreciated

It seems that you've eliminated external causes.
I would contact Nord Technical Support at the following link:

I've read that there are some issues with the power supplies on some of the Lead units:

There's not enough information to say for sure that your instrument fits into this category.

The Lead has no real Osc2, which could be dying… There is only a kind of computer using DSP technique which calculates the settings of the Panel and creates the sound using D/A converters.

A failing Power can’t be solved by changing the Program (Patch) and return to the original, as you describe in your first post. The power supply will cause you an overall crash, so you have to restart the synth completely.

It can be a rotten pot in the Gain setting. When it is just between two values (digital) and the heat of the power supply will warm the pot, the synth will detect a changing of the Gain, which could be a real setting of almost zero. Changing the Program will reset the value to the desired one: loud!

Press [Shift+LFO wave form] and tweak the Gain to 10 in the LCD. This button combination will set the Lead in a Knob testing mode. Wait a while until the pot will be heated by the power supply. (The Gain is the most nearest to it…) When the figures in the LCD will change you’ll find if the pot is rotten or not.

Went into Pot setup mode and both the gain pot and osc 2 pot readings were not tracking smoothly. Pots cleaned and exercised and it seems to have cleared the problem. Checked all other pots ok.


So far so good and flicking oscillator light stopped.
