A1: Drive "on"-led

Postby skipgilles » 10 Jul 2019, 23:23

One of the cool things of the Nord A1 is that I have understood every single button, knob and led since day one. However, there is one exception:

*Why is there a led that shows whether the drive of the filter is "on"?

Simply because when you load a Program you have no way to know whether it was saved with a Drive value greater than 0, the current knob position is not relevant at load so the led tells you at a glance if that sound had that knob turned (Drive "on") or not when it was saved. You find the same led and behavior on Nord Stage/ELectro AmpSim Drive.

Dear maxpiano,
Thank you for your answer. You are completely right, that is what it indicates. I should have been more precise in my question maybe: why is this indicator there only for drive? I guessed this is because this is the only parameter that has a zero value that means off. But, no, that also holds for, e.g., the rate parameter of the effect , the wetness of the delay and the lfo and env amounts. It still seems a bit random to me, like "we had one led light left, where shall we put it?"
(ans yes, it is a very trivial issue)

I see your point now, well I guess it is because some people may think the distortion is due to an audio failure... ?

PS: actually, thinking twice the other examples you made are never "switched off" when set to 0, they are just... set to 0, so that is a difference.

I just discovered something peculiar considering this rather trivial issue: on my A1, the effect rate button has "off" at the lower left (like the one on this picture too), whereas I see on some pictures on the net that there are also A1's where there's a "0", like here. Isn't that fascinating? :)

One hypothesis is that both the "on-led" for the drive and the "0"/"off" inconsistency are leftovers of some design choices that Nord has reconsidered in the development process, but I cannot really come up with a good explanation of how and why then.
