Hej!
Last night I was browsing through some promotion videos for the Sub 37, which has interesting features and a nice price, trying to decide if my next kbd will be a Moog.
When I over and over again stumbled over the name Bernie Worrell. Who the h*ll is that guy?
(I think I) Found The Funk
Some research gave me the info that Mr Worrell was one of the fathers of funk! Together with George Clinton he seems to have started both Parliament and Funkadelic = P-funk.
Wow! Among their many super hits is "Flashlight" from 1977. (I don' actually really remember all the details of the 70:ies ... I was there but ... chemicals & herbs ... )
Mr Worrell really show off how you can funk that MiniMoog (is his one the one with serial no 2?).
(A few notes, sloppy, with my French drummer, Mr Arturia. Mr Spark on guitar.)
So, how to dial in that rump-shakin' MiniMoog bass? More research gave me the six commandments;
1. The filter - ladder. Named for its sets of paired transistors - is available in most Moogs ... and the NLA1!
2. Dirt - the MiniMoog circuitry was far from perfect. Add some distortion to your patch. You got two sources on your NLA1. Use them.
3. Square - "it's hip to be" ... you got two square waveforms to mix on your NLA1, add some unison (3) to get more detune.
4. Some glide - the Moog is monophonic ... use the glide. You should practice using this a lot if you want to really nail the funk (I never practice).
5. Bend over - use the wooden stick. It's much more exact on the NLA1 than the analog Moog. But practice. (Not me.)
6. Legato - use it! This adds even more dynamics to your performance.
OK, I'm not a funk player ... but these were "facts" I manage to find out. Please comment ...
This is Mr Studnitzky of Funk Unit. I go to their concert in Scania every summer. He is ... WOW! FUNK!
