Would changing from a Kronos to an Electro 5D be worth it?

Post by duque5582 »

Greetings friends, I currently have a Korg Kronos 61 in my studio and I would like to venture into the world of Nord, and the one that is most within my financial reach is the Nord Electro 5D, in that sense I would like to know if the change would be worth it. That is to say, selling my Kronos to acquire the Electro, I know that they are very different keyboards in terms of functions, but in terms of quality of construction and materials, they are on par. Now what I would like is the opinions of the participants of this very distinguished forum. Thank you very much in advance for your answers, they will be of great help to me

for studio, you're probably better off with a kronos than an electro. Nords are more for live use. and an electro 5 won't give you any where near the range of sounds you can get from a kronos. buy the electro if it's a good price, but keep the kronos.

The other option would be a Nord stage 3 with 73 keys but it is a little more expensive although in reality it is the one that attracts me the most but here in my country the NS3-73 is extremely expensive. I have never had a Nord and this is Electro 5D, it is the one. that fits my current budget that's why I thought about this one for the change

A Kronos is a true workstation it a recording studio inside a keyboard. I would get rid of my Stage 3 before I would sell my Kronos 88 it does everything and has real nice keybed. Now as already mention Nords are all about live performance not used in studios much. So are you going to be doing more perfomance?

I certainly work more live on stages also in churches and Christian events that's why I thought that perhaps the electro 5d or 6d are a good option for live presentation for the neat image on stage and because they are fashionable but the kronos It is still superior in every aspect and I love it. I would like to be able to have both but at this moment it is not possible to have one, I must do without the other keyboard

Hi duque

and a very warm welcome to this great forum of nord enthusiasts.

As long as you can only afford one of the two I would keep the korg. The electro 5D is very limited if it comes to „typical“ sounds a keyboarder has to cover such as brass, strings, lively synth pads and leads. I have the 5D and the Kronos‘ little sister X50 which fortunately is as versatile as your Kronos. I can play rehearsals and even smaller live gigs with the korg only, but never with the electro solely except I would only use organ and pianos.

Cheers from Germany

Greetings, friend from Venezuela, the truth is that I have previously had keyboards from all brands, Yamaha, Korg, Kurzweil, Roland and Alesis, even an Orla, but until now I had not been able to access the Nord brand and basically my work is based on the platforms at ecclesiastical events and church events, and here in Venezuela the Nords are considered luxury equipment that is difficult to obtain, therefore it would be more for fashion and luxury, but the truth is that their acoustic piano sounds are well above average. I would say that they are premium range so I would like to try

Yep, I can well understand this desire. The more red boards you find on the stages worldwide the stronger it gets.

Luck is on your side, I‘d say, because you can try it - and if it doesn‘t meet your needs you can sell it again with probably no loss. Nords are famous for their value stability, even as used instruments.

Good luck, and whatever you‘ll do, reporting back would be nice.

Cheers from Germany

Hard to compare Kronos to an Electro.
Not the same usage, not at all the same philosophy. Both have pros and cons, really depends on what you're looking for.
Easier to compare workstation to workstation : Kronos - Montage - Fantom than Nord family.

As others have said they're hard to compare, but it seems you're losing too much by selling the Korg. The Kronos can easily be the only keyboard you will use for the rest of your life. The Electro not, pure and simple. In addition, you have never tried a Nord so you cannot be sure if you will like the sounds and interface. It's a very risky gamble to make, especially because as you say, in your country it will not be easy to go back (re-sell the Nord and get another Kronos), and you will probably lose money in the process.

I would only consider selling the Kronos if:
- you don't like the sounds
- you hate the interface and cannot work confortably with it
- you only use a few selected sounds (piano, organ, strings and pads), and have no need for the millions of other complex sound engines.

The Electro offers the advantage of a few high quality sounds in an easy and friendly interface, but you really should try it before buying to make sure it's exactly what you need. Otherwise you risk making a very expensive mistake that may seriously compromise your work for the future.
