I know, I know: RTFM !
The manual enigmatic says “The program section is where you store a program....
The management software has a whole section dedicated to its arrangement
But what “is” it ??
What am I storing and to what end ?

Re: What is a “program” ?
All the front panel settings that make up the sound. They're stored (as something called a Program) so you don't have to dial all those settings in again every time you want the same sound.

Re: What is a “program” ?
It's written in the manual, but you have to FR it all , there is a chapter called “About Programs” in the very first pages that says...
About the programs
Sound and effect settings are stored in the Program memory of the Nord Electro 4D . The Electro 4D organizes the memory in 32 pages with 4 programs in each page, making this a total of 128 programs .
Every program can be changed and replaced as you wish . A complete set of the factory programs are available on the Nord DVD that accom- panies the unit and on our website . This allows you to get back to the factory settings, should you wish to do so, using the Sound Manager .

Re: What is a “program” ?
On the E4, a program is made up of the following:
1. The selected instrument type: piano, organ or synth
2. For piano or synth:
a. The selected sample
b. The settings for that sample, including octave, Acoustics (piano), clay EQ (clavinet), envelope control (sample synth)
3. For organ:
a. Organ model
b. Drawbar setting, vibrato/chorus, percussion, preset, rotary
c. Split settings (upper/lower drawbar setting, split point)
4. All effects settings: EQ, Effect 1 & 2. speaker/compressor. delay/reverb, gain
All of these parameters will be stored with a program.
In addition, a program will store the parameters for both the organ and piano/synth instruments, even if it's not the selected instrument. What that means is that you can store the settings for the organ in the program, even though the piano is the "selected" instrument. This allows you to quickly jump to another sound without changing programs. In the program, the piano is the active instrument. If you select organ, the stored organ settings will become active. Be aware, though, that the effects are global - you cannot store specific settings for the effects with each instrument, but you can select which effects are "on" for each instrument. That means that the EQ settings will affect both piano and organ, but you can choose to have the EQ off for piano and on for organ.
I hope that makes sense.

Close...
A program is the combination of selected sound(s), with the settings and parameters that colour it/them.
