vox continental confusion

Post by azwel »

in the book, it says the 16, 8 , 4, II and III controls the UPPER manual. And the 8. 4. 2 and IV controsl the LOWER manual. ...This is an electro.. there is only 1 manual! It seems like theyre trying to emulate the "supercontinental" but on the electro there is only 1 set of keys not two. Can anyone clear this up for me.
also, i may be even more confusing, having never played a continental in my life. Ive been looking onlike and at youtube videos though

My Electro is the E3HP version. I have used the B3 modeling with an extra external keyboard connected through MIDI (5-pin DIN). It was fun! Should work with Vox modeling too? ;)

(It's described in the Electro manual ...)

NE3HP, NP88, NS2, DPP1, NL2X, NL2X, NLA1, NL4, NE5D, NW2 (Collect Them All?), some classic Rolands, Arturias, a Waldorf, a Kurz, a WONOK3, a pile of guitars, a P-bass, loopers, amps and computers ...
I'm a gearslut!

Just like the Hammond B3 emulation, you can split the keyboard if you don't have another to midi to it. Farfisa Compact model is the Duo version too. Sadly, you can't have one keyboard for Hammond and one for Farfisa at the same time. :(

ok..but if I dont split it, How do those 8. 4. 2 and IV 's etc translate to a single keyboard? Im on youtube and trying to get a sound that one guy is using on a vox cont. but the extra drawbars is confusing me

If split is off, the organ registrations heard (and set on the "drawbars") are either upper or lower depending on the buttons. In other words, you play either upper or lower settings with the whole keyboard. Set the split on and the lower is the left hand half. You can transpose the octaves of upper and lower halves separately so they overlap how you like so the lower half can be the higher pitched than the upper if you want.

As to the drawbar differences see here...
http://www.combo-organ.com/Vox/Dual/

It appears the Super lower is the "normal" manual and the upper is different from the more common single manual instrument. I'll have to check if Nord have got it the right way round, but it might explain why some say they can't get a Vox sound they expect if they have it on Upper and don't realize they should use the Lower!

Thanks that was very helpful.. I had the setting on upper! I probably want lower. Let me know if they confirm that. I didnt even realize what lo and up settings. meant until now. Im still learning.

EDIT:http://www.voxshowroom.com/uk/organ/V301E_drawbars.html This is a drawbar thing for the continetnal original(i think)
and it shows the drawbars as 16, 8, 4, and IV.

in the nord manual it says the top bar is 16 8 4 and II/II
and the bottom is 8 , 4 , 2 and IV. so it may be closer to the upper section

Actually, I just checked.

Nord provide all of the different drawbars on both upper and lower manuals, you have all 3 of II, III and IV mixtures. I thought I hadn't noticed any difference myself but needed to check.
That being so, it will help to know which are only applicable for a single manual Continental and the combo-organ site has the info. They are 16' 8', 4', IV, "~", "M" - and you can use upper or lower to get them and leave the II and III drawbars on zero.

The Farfisa also has the same "tabs" available for both upper and lower while the Compact Duo had a very meagre selection for the lower manual.

It seems closer to the upper section. 16 8 4 and II/II vs 16, 8, 4, and IV.
Thats very cool. Ill leave the bars I dont want at 0. Yes, now time to dissect the farfisa lol

I was just a/b ing my vox sound with this guys
I get an exact sound to his single keyboard vox when using: 16, 8, 4, II, III, and IV all the way up to 8...and the sine wave and other wave things both to 8. also a tiny bit of treble added and no amp sim.
