Using Live Mode on an Electro 3HP

Postby Dmoilliet » 18 May 2022, 21:35

Greetings, am trying to store a Program (specifically 9:2) into Live mode (anyone of the 4 locations will do) but am not having success. Manual says that once in Live mode, user changes are tracked, stored and can be recalled even after a power cycle. It works for organ patches and samples but I can't figure out how to store Programs. Any help appreciated.

If you want to save a program within the Live Buffer / Live memory bank, it's only like a starting point as all subsequent changes will automatically be applied not only to the running performance, but also to the stored live program.

According to the (German) manual, it should be possible for the NE3HP as well as for the other NE3s - even if program places are namend and managed differently. Calling up the program to copy, hitting <Store>, hitting <Live> (or maybe <Live> + program number), hitting <Store> again should do it. I've never seen a NE3, though. And it's not very clearly explained.

I've got to add that I didn't fully understand what you meant by "It works for organ patches and samples but I can't figure out how to store Programs." Normally, live mode isn't meant to store programs manually at all - all changes are applied automatically. That's what live mode means. So I'm not sure what you did with organ patches or samples in live mode -- besides applying them to set up your sound/program.

If it really shouldn't work to transfer a normal program into one of the live program places, just call up live mode, select the program you want to shape and set the engine (organ, piano/sample) in the way the program to copy did - and add the same effects. Done as well.

I appreciate your fast response. Let me clarify: on the Electro 3 HP, the live buffer has four buttons where you can "record" the changes made real time to 4 separate sounds (eg Epiano, Clav or Sample) and then recall them (even after a power cycle). The idea of course is that you can quickly toggle between these 4 which is helpful during a live performance. What I've found is that you can only use the live buffer when you are toggling through the piano/organ section but you can't use it if you try to select a sound that is part of the program section. My Nord has two distinct sections: the Piano and Organ section and the Program section. The program section contains the Live buffer buttons but also an up/down arrow that you can access additional stored sounds. If you hit the Live button and, say, the "Up" button in the program section, the Live buffer turns off...it doesn't do that when you hit the Live button then toggle from Piano to ePiano. Does that explain the issue more clearly?

As I said, I never owned a NE3. But after reading part of the manual and looking at the panel, I'm quite confident the basic architecture is quite similar to the Nord instruments I know.

I'd try to explain what a program is: It's the entire settings from the panel concerning either organ or piano/sample engine (the NE3 is monotimbral meaning it can only play one sound at a time) plus all effects settings. Programs are normally stored in the NE3 within 32 banks of 4 programs each - and if you play one it can be modified for playing without being modified in the memory.

Next to explain is the live buffer: It's nothing but a special extra bank containing 4 programs (as above) where every change is instantly stored so after switching away and back to it, it will always be as it was the last time you played it. Besides, it's the same sort of 'container' for sound settings as a program is.

As normal programs and live programs are a similar set of things but always in another section of the memory, there's nothing strange about the fact that you will leave live mode when entering the normal program section/banks.

So, I still haven't understood what your issue is. The manual even says that it should be possible to store a live setting ('program') into a normal program bank or vice versa - to be able to switch between both parts of the memory.

As a program always consists of either organ or piano/sample + FX, there is nothing you can't set by yourself in live mode. Just set what otherwise has already been set in one of the programs you would want to play 'live'.

Either you play a normal program: You can easily modify it on the fly, but have the option to store those changes manually or leave the program as-is.

Or you play a live program: Then you won't recognise it after a few weeks as it always changes a bit when being played and modified on the panel.

Getting the best of both worlds (selecting a program from the normal banks and loading it to a momentary live program every now and then) should be possible according to the manual -- but certainly not by hitting a single button. So it's rather a possibility for preparing for a gig than for doing it live on stage multiple times an evening.

Hi Dmoilliet,
I quoted the part of FZiegler first response that describes how to do the thing I think you’re trying to accomplish. Basically it sounds like you want to move an existing program to the live buffer and play it and modify it there. Follow the steps above and I think that will get you there. It works pretty much the same on my Stage 2. Hope that helps!

Thanks for the feedback but the Nord Electro 3 HP is very different that the Stage....I want to upgrade to a stage but prices have gone crazy. If I do as FZiegler suggested, here's what happens:
1) Select Program 16:3
2) Hit Store "STO" --> comes up momentarily then disappears (I think at this point all I've accomplished is overwriting the existing Program 16:3 sound with what ever changes were made prior to hitting store..)
3) Hit the Live Buffer button --> as soon as I do this, the Program 16:3 disappears from the LED window and L1, L2, L3 or L4 appears (indicating which of the 4 live buffer spots I'm in)
4) Hit Store again --> The lIve Buffer LED light turns off and "STO" Appears in the Program LED window.

The reason I want quick access to the program sounds is that it takes time to toggle through the programs with the up and down arrows 16 times and If I want to use that sound during a particular song, I can't access it fast enough. The Electro 3 HP Is great at toggling between piano and organ (by setting a sound in each of the sections then hitting the Piano or Organ section button) but not between Program sounds and either the Piano or organ sections. I hope I've described it adequately and appreciate any new feedback. Maybe it just can't be done....

Interesting…do you know if you have memory protect on? I think that’s what it’s called. It’s just a toggle that either prevents or allows edits to the sounds (aka programs). I believe you’ll find that in the system settings.

The Nord Sound Manager software allows you to order and manage all your programs. I'd try to figure out an order that won't let you fiddle around to find the basic sounds you need. Or doesn't the NE3 have a memory that can be managed from extern?
