RE: Preference Of Factory Samples?
Hi folks,
Another thread (sorry!).
I wanted to ask, please: do most Electro users retain the Nord factory samples on their synths, or do most users wipe them off - obviously one can reinstall them again if needed.
I think that some of the Nord samples are actually very good (esp. the strings); and so I would probably keep around 10 of these loaded. But the brass samples are quite weak so I am replacing most of them. There are other Nord samples of which I will never have any use for (eg. flute, guitar, and harp), and so these have been long since deleted.
I'm not sure exactly how many samples in total I have currently loaded (a quick glance at the NSM looks like circa 150+). And I only have 35MB free space!
I would estimate that 50% of the samples onboard my machine are Nord's, and the other half are ones I have acquired from elsewhere.
But has anyone done away with ALL of Nord's samples and completely filled their machine with self-creations? Also, does anyone find themselves running out of sample memory MB? Or do you always have room to spare?
Many thanks in advance . . .

Re: RE: Preference Of Factory Samples?
I normally have only a small amout of free space.
When I want to load a new sample I look through and find something unused that im unlikely to want and delete it to make room.

Hi Norm,
So you are pretty full to the brim to start with then?! Is it not a bit of a PITA running this procedure just for the sake of loading merely 1 or 2 samples? I mean, do you really need to carry a full house all of the time?
Secondly, is your machine full of your own samples, Nord's, or some of both?
I now have 185MB free memory.
Cheers,
Paul

Re: RE: Preference Of Factory Samples?
Just be careful that you are not deleting sounds or samples that are a significant component of a factory program that you like or use. Yes, fetching them from the webpage is always an option, but you'd hate to discover your program doesn't sound correct while you are in the middle of a creative moment. Becasue of this, I'm with Norm, and will delete more conservatively. That said, it is appealing the thought of wiping the slate clean and getting creative with sound development or download happy in the forum, without worrying about space to save it all.
I have had to do the same re-organizing of the Factory Programs because they seemed so randomly placed within the 8 Program Banks. I'm guessing other NE5D users have had to do the same. In my NE5 at least, it seems the samples are grouped much better than the Programs are.

Re: RE: Preference Of Factory Samples?
It depends on what you want to use your NORD for. You may not need two different kinds of glockenspiel, a Persian Santur, or an endless selection of synth basses in your board. You might also find that a lot of the string sounds are either quite similar to each other or just unusable.
If you are principally a recording artist, having a ton of samples loaded may be useful when casting around for ideas. If you are chiefly a live performer, it's doubtful your audience is going to appreciate the difference between three Solo Cello samples - if you even need Solo Cello in your band at all. For Lou Reed's Street Hassle, maybe?

Some of these samples are tied to the factory presets - of which there are also an enormous number, many of them which you will never use. So if you decide to remove a sample, you can see in the sample manager if it's attached to a preset, and make your decision that way.

Hi PaulS,
I actually ran a search in the NSM before radically deleting factory samples/presets, but thanks for mentioning it!
I think there is a method where you can wave a magic wand and RESTORE the entire machine back to factory default state (but I have never experimented with it as yet, to be honest).
I did not originally intend on "wiping the slate clean"; it was an attitude which developed over time. I just found, over the months, that most of the samples, and presets, where kinda' superfluous for my needs. However, it's great though that Nord packed the machine with so many 'sounds' so as to try and please everyone.
I totally agree that the preset library is somewhat chaotically presented. I may post a screenshot of my finalized organization...
Cheers.

Hi Gambold,
Your synopsis makes perfect sense.
Nobody ever offers me sessions so I don't fall into that musical category.
Correct - I don't need every 'orchestral' instrument under the sun (and I feel that many of these samples are quite poor anyway). But I so have quite a few String sounds because (although "similar", as you say) some of them are very impressive. The Brass ones (which I have grabbed online, or otherwise) are more than acceptable, I feel. I then have quite a lot of Piano, Rhodes, Clavinet, and Organ presets - of which I use predominantly, to be honest. Then a have about 20 Synth samples, and finally some Special-FX samples (which I created/acquired) to use on my own personal jazz gigs.
I don't think I can whittle the list down any more, otherwise I'll have practically nothing left!
Paul

Hi Paul,
the “magic wand” is the factory restore download from Nord’s web page, this is the link to the one for the Electro 6: https://www.nordkeyboards.com/sites/default/files/files/sound-libraries/product-libraries/nord-electro-6/Nord%20Electro%206%20Factory%20Restore%20RevD%20v2.5x.ne6b
You just download the file and save it on your computer and, if needed, load it onto your Nord Electro 6 with the help of Nord Sound Manager. The procedure is explained here in detail: https://www.nordkeyboards.com/sites/default/files/files/downloads/Nord%20Factory%20Restore%20Instructions%20Edition%20C.pdf
This will wipe your Electro 6 and resets it to the original stage, so please make sure to backup everything from your Electro which you have created and want to keep before loading the factory default content.
P.S.: I don’t know the answer to your question regarding the EPiano1 and EPiano2 categories but am also interested to know
