According to the info supplied in the link posted earlier, it is just a switch on one of the cables. So yes, same as disconnecting the cable (the only advantage being that it would be more discreet to press a button nearby than having to reach the back of the kbd to disconnect the cable and then try to reconnect it again, if you need to).
It should be possible to make an arduino type of box with a proper MIDI off switch that sends 'all notes off' in all channels (panic button-like), resets all controllers in all channels and interrupts the midi flow.
And yes, you could make a live location blank. Just remember never to switch any section on as it will be automatically stored it won't be blank anymore. Perhaps it is safer to store a particular blank program.

OK, cheers. So you still are required to apply good MIDI-technique (as I mentioned earlier).

Yes, that's exactly the signal it needs to execute.

It's probably wisest to STORE the blank location as you say. However, I was suggesting 'Live' mode for the simple reason that it's very easy to jump to, from wherever you may currently be on the keyboard.

How about old school simple, just add a foot pedal mute switch to the output of the VX. If your running mono out of the VX there are lots of foot pedals available. If you want to run stereo you'll like have to do a custom box, but its stupid simple to build.

EDIT: here is a link to a stereo kill switch. You'd want the 4 socket option.

Gee, again, I never even knew of such a device! I think I need to try and get out a bit more often! 8-)

Yes, that looks right. 4 mono sockets option under "socket layout"

Really appreciate it, THANKS.

The beauty of this one is that I can now continue to use my Yamaha FC7 pedal (as I was) with the Nord (organ swell, crescendo strings, etc) without having it interfere with the XV5050.

Hm... would that make a POP! noise when engaged/disengaged? It is a passive device, so I guess it to be a two pole switch... The advantage of a volume pedal is that it will not do so and that you can also (obviously) control the volume, but you need more feet now. How many feet have you got? The average human has less than two.
