Problems with NE3 and MIDI

Postby tessel » 22 Sep 2012, 18:41

Same question here:
I use the NE3 with macbook, using the midi1x1 E-mu USB thing and Reaper.

After reading this, I came a bit further, by turning of my firewall (is this a permanent thing to do, or can I some how say to the firewall that it can let the midithing thru).
But I still don't get MIDI on my track. Neither does the midi-light on my Electro3 burn. What to do next?
Reaper sees the midi in and out, but it doesn't work.

Can anyone tell me more on how to get this to work?

Thanku!

Disabling the firewall is something you can try if you have trouble installing drivers and/or you have trouble with your computer recognizing hardware. If your MIDI interface was installed without issue (and it looks like it), then you can turn on your firewall again to protect your PC.

If you send out MIDI via Reaper over the Emu MIDI interface, does the MIDI activity LED on the side of the USB connector flash? Also, did you plug in your MIDI cables correctly? MIDI out on the Emu plugs into the MIDI in port on the Electro 3 and MIDI in on the Emu plugs into MIDI out on the Electro 3.

I'm pretty sure we can get this resolved, but lets first check you've got it cabled correctly. :-)

Cables are correctly plugged: the 'in' in the 'in' and the 'out' in the 'out'! :)
When I plug in the usb-cable into my macbook: one blue light flickers shortly, and the white one is burning constantly. But pressing any keys doesn't make anything else flicker.
I'm pretty new to MIDI, so this might be a very stupid question, but: How do I send out MIDI from Reaper? And what is the use of sending midi to the piano?

Well there's your problem then, I think.

MIDI out on the NE3 goes to MIDI in on the Emu, MIDI out on the Emu goes to MIDI in on the NE3.

Think of MIDI data as flowing from an output to an input. The MIDI out port transmits an electrical signal and the MIDI in port receives this electrical signal. In your case, you've got two transmitters hooked up together and two receivers. :ugeek:

I think the white one just means 'I have power and the driver has initialized me'. The blue one probably flashes when a MIDI message is sent and there's likely a third color that flashes when a MIDI message is received. (I have the same interface and went looking for it, but I couldn't find it.)

Hook up the MIDI cables correctly and try again. Assuming you've got the version shown below (the older one had a smaller USB connector and a round bit in the cable with the LEDs), the grey MIDI connector goes into the NE3's MIDI OUT port and the black MIDI connector goes into the NE3's MIDI IN port.

Read the bit above again about MIDI data flowing from MIDI OUT to MIDI IN.

Wohooo!! Yes.. it was the problem with the plugs.
Now my next question: Is there a possibility to use my Nord sounds in Reaper's midi?
I guess the files I got on the 2 cd-roms that I got with the instrument, aren't VSTi's. Can I make them into this? Or is there another way?

You can't do that, the sounds are compressed in a special way and only the hardware in the Nord keyboards can decompress them. You could of course use your Electro as an instrument in Reaper, if you connect the outputs of the Electro to the audio inputs on your computer. No idea how you'd set that up though, I only know how to use Ableton Live and Logic (a bit).

You could sample your Electro of course.
