Yes, you need to get better speakers.

The PR12 is an entry level $399 list powered speaker that sells for $225-$250. You do get what you pay for.

At a minimum you should be looking at something like the QSC K8 or K8.2 (these start around $650 and would be a big improvement over the PR12s)

The XR8300 mixer is fine for what it is, but again it falls in the low-end of the equipment spectrum. Although for basic mixing needs it should be fine.

As a point of reference, our small FOH rig is a pair of EAW LA212's and a sub-woofer. Each LA212 was $1700+ list ($1200 street) and they are passive speakers still requiring a power amp. I could purchase 6 of the PR12's for the price of one LA212. Yes, they sound that much better.

Well, those were very important clarifications...

Your best upgrade would be the speakers. Nord pianos sound very much like well miked acoustics, and they require good amplification. Maybe you could bring your board into a shop where you can try out a range of options? In the US, QSC seems to be popular. Here in Europe RCF may be an equally good option that is easier to get hold of.

The usual issue is that the keyboard is feeding 2 mono mixer channels and they are both panned centre of the stereo sound stage. The Left output must be panned hard left - and the right goes...well, you know...
With the type of "stereo" used in the Nord piano samples, you must never mix left & right together in the amplification. The mixing must be done acoustically in the auditorium using separate amplification & speakers for each channel. Even if the left and right speakers are side by side with each other, it will still work (and is actually closer to the original sample recording soundstage using a pair of mics over the piano).
In Wales, no one will hear you scream.

Cr*p speakers will consistently deliver cr*p sound. You can't EQ your way out of it.

JiminWales, makes a great point. I completely missed that the XR8300 is a mono mixer. That is definitely going to cause problems. If your going to use the XR8300 than you'll really only want to use a single channel from the Nord.

If your going to invest in new speakers, you should also consider getting a stereo mixing console to go with them.

Hi folks, last night I was deeply impressed by Liverpool's Fab Four: 7., 54., 56. and 79. minute! Now I'd like to add something more serious. I sometimes play the piano over my normal home stereo, no matter if via Line-outs or via headphone output - with the correct adaptors for each way - and I'm always glad about how deep and full it sounds. The Imperial Grand is great. And I know that on live gigs with a good PA it sounds the same. Stereo, hard panned, only little reverb, good feel in the sustain pedal foot, and that's it. Looking forward to my next gig on Hessentag. Have a nice day.

You might like them better if you adjust eq settings to your liking with your setup.

My simple advice for someone in your situation?

Buy a pair of QSC K8.2s or similar. Put them on a pair of poles behind you. You will be freaking amazed at how good you sound. I believe these units are the best bang-for-buck for this kind of situation. I have a wide arsenal, these ones in particular are a standout.

(Long list of sound gear omitted due to space limitations. That picture on the right is me playing a cr*p gig with a cr*p band and a cr*p sound guy, it didn't matter because I had great gear and I sounded GLORIOUS)

As far as FOH, go find a small mixer with a mono aux FX loop. Send the mono FX loop to the sound guy if he/she doesn't know how to deal with stereo. Use the main outputs of the mixer to drive your on-stage rig, and be prepared to enjoy glorious stereo all night long.

If it's a smaller venue, you can take matters into your own hands -- crank up your on-stage rig, and put the sound person to shame. It's a proven formula in my world. A pair of 2000w QSC K8.2s bring some definite game.

Best of luck?
