Nord Electro 6D as 2nd board

Post by jsaunders86 »

I recently upgraded my primary gigging board to a Yamaha YC 88 but am now in the market for a second board, as the YC is sometimes too heavy to lug around to shows, church, etc. And so, I'm trying to find the right board that is 1. Portable ( lightweight w/ 61keys is preferable) but could still function as a main keyboard for smaller events, jam sessions, worship, etc. 2. Allow me to primarily focus on piano (pretty great piano sounds are a plus) and organ sounds BUT also give me a decent synth to use for other songs. 3. Be a great compliment for the YC88 for bigger shows or worship services. As I've been looking around the two that seem to make the most sense are the the Nord Electro 6D 61 and the Roland Fantom-06 (open to others though). I've played both in-store for a while but it's tough to determine which would better suit my needs. Anyway, I would love any thoughts or advice! Thanks in advance!

Hi and welcome to this forum!

I suggest you also consider a Nord Stage 3 Compact or Nord Stage 4 Compact, especially if a decent synth is important for you since the Electro 6D does not have a real synth engine, it just plays Nord samples. The Stage also gives you more flexibility since it offers two sets of the sound engines for piano, organ and synth.

Electro 6D vs Fantom-06?

Electro has better sounding pianos, and its action is also better for piano playing (though still nowhere near the action of the YC88). Electro also has all 9 drawbars (vs. only the first 8 sliders, and the ninth on-screen only). Electro also has more dedicated real-time effects controls. But still doesn't give you more synth functionality than the YC.

Roland gives you much more synth functionality, much more split/layer flexibility, a nice touchscreen (for patch selection, sound editing, set list management, etc.), more MIDI functionality, drum patterns... all kinds of stuff, really. It's a much deeper board than the Electro or the YC... Electro and YC basically do fewer things, but do most of them really well.

As a board to use with the YC, I'd lean toward the Fantom. As a board to use in place of the YC, I'd lean toward the Electro.
