Nord Electro 2,5,6 piano sounds
Hi! I have a Nord Stage 2 EX and I was looking to purchase an older used nord electro that would be easier to lug around for practice. I'm seeing some nord electro 5 and 2s as well. My question is - are the piano sounds in these older models pretty similar to the ones on the nord stage ? In general, do the piano sounds sound pretty close to the nord stage? Or would you say that I need to stick to a new electro model, maybe the 6 or the 5 at least to get the same piano sounds? The effects quality are also important to me. Thanks!

The Stage 2EX has basically the same piano functionality as in Electro 5. (Though the E5 does not let you layer two pianos, and does not support triple pedal.)
if you go back to the Electro 4, you lose the more advanced string resonance features, and compatibility with the White Grand. Piano library capacity drops from 1 gigabyte to 380 megabytes (or 180 mb on the 61 key version).
If you go back to the Electro 3, you also lose the Long Release (except on the HP model), and memory is 180 mb.
The Electro 2 has no compatibility with the Stage piano library.

Actually, that's not entirely true. The last OS update for the Electro 2 (v3.04) changed the sample format so that versions of two pianos from the Nord Stage's piano library could be used: a Yamaha C7 and a better Steinway D.analogika wrote:Also, the Electro 2 acoustic pianos are s***.
The C7 and the D are pretty decent given the sample size limitations of a twenty year old instrument. It's to Clavia's credit that they bumped up the Electro 2's capabilities over time. Here's a good example of one the Electro 2's acoustic pianos (the first 35 seconds):

what I found about NE2's piano sound with the latest updated pianos, basically it's not that bad except few notes in upper register are out-of-tune..michael_C1 wrote:Actually, that's not entirely true. It's not that significant error but I presume that when they sampled it, they just did it without extra-careful pitch evaluation process I guess.
But I believe on the condition that if it's hooked up into fairly nice sound system with stereo speakers, the piano sound is not that bad, in my opinion, but
it's also 'not that super great'

If you are just looking for a low-cost digital keyboard to lug around for piano sounds, you'd be better off buying a Casio Privia, which will give you a full keyboard and has plenty of decent acoustic sounds, plus good action. These acoustic samples are not in the same league as Nord's current ones, but they are miles ahead of anything you will be able to run on an Electro 2. Plus the action is quite good for that price-class.
