NE6 - Some Samples come filtered/dynamic defaults?

Postby Proche3 » 11 Sep 2019, 23:43

Hello!

Had my NE6 for about a month and I've been geeking out over the Nord Electro library, especially the sample archive for amazing old synth sounds. I have just one small gripe at this moment, and that is with downloaded samples. At least here on the E6, most of the sampled sounds default to some amount of dynamics or filter choices. I want to be able to simply open an empty program, turn the sample select dial and play samples with no processing or other features turned on. I don't want to have to worry about how many clicks of dynamics or filtering I need to get through in order to undo this madness before I can get to just the regular sound with no dynamics engaged. Is there a way to disable the (what appear to be default) filtering or dynamics choices on samples? Or is the only way to create a whole new sample and reload it in?

Keep in mind that most of these samples are being converted by the sample library from nsmp, and do NOT come as NSMP3 which I read provide the ability to default effects, dynamics or other stylistic choices as default. My gut says this should not be happening. Any help is appreciated.

Your NE6 loads NSMP3 format files, and any NSMP format ones are converted to NSMP3 format as you download them -- and if they didn't have default settings for filters and dynamics, they get some default ones, as far as I can tell. So all samples stored on your NE6 have default values that are loaded when you dial through them.

The Nord Stage 3 allows you to scroll through the samples while loading their default values (in list mode scrolling through samples) OR just change the sample without loading the default values, when using the sample dial -- but that won't help you, unfortunately.

I guess that's why we still need the long promised NSMP3 version of the Nord Sample Editor, so we could (presumably) edit these parameters.

Maybe you mean the Nord Sample Editor (where those parameter are set, before generating the .nsmp)?

Ahh, yes this is my question as to whether or not I can edit default values and I'm hearing that this not an option. That is pretty odd to me. Who the hell thought it was a good idea to default filter and dynamic choices that always result in a low, almost unusable state of volume :wtf:

This may be a good one to write nord as I feel this is a very poor design decision. I just don't understand where the defaults are coming from, just be the conversion process?

For now I'm stuck creating programs for the ones I want to use and wasting program slots in the interest of quick patch changes. Frustrating.

If you feel like writing to Nord about this, just do it (using the support form on Nord website).
For now the only thing you can do is to modify the defaults and save all as a Program, you have many locations on your NE6 anyway so it shouldn't be such a big issue.

PS: given the way NSE works today, you wouldn't be able to modify the defaults of existing .nsmp files anyway, only the creator of those .nsmp(s) can (i.e. recreating it from the original .wav(s) in the Nord Sample Editor and with new defaults)

Whoops. Yes, fixed. That's where it's done, and that's where the site still speaks about a forthcoming update.

If you use the Organize mode to create songs, the NE6's 416 program locations can start to go quickly, since unlike the equivalent feature on the NE5 or NS3, every 4-program "song" you create actually uses up 4 of your Program locations. (Need a piano for 30 songs? That piano will take up 30 Program locations.)

Yep anotherscott, you are right, I forgot that NE6 "innovation" regarding Song mode... (why Nord, why??)
