NE4D L/mono Output Dead (almost)

Postby AgeOleSun » 28 Aug 2017, 16:04

NE4D L/Mono output jack sending audio but incredibly low level, I have to turn my master volume and my amplifier volume to 100% to get the volume to a whisper. I bought in 2014, it failed a year later (along with one of the key velocities but managed to fix that) and I have been limping along using the headphone jack with an insert cable to break out into stereo to FOH. Now in a situation where I can't do that and need both the headphone jack and L/R jacks fully functional during the show. All other outputs function 100%. Does not matter piano sounds, organ sounds, EP sounds, the L/Mono now permanently operates at a whisper level.

I need the full functionality of the jacks to get two stereo feeds directly off of my NE4D without any sort of extra setup like mixers, DI patching thru's, etc. My setup and teardown have to be lightning fast and very mobile, I don't have time to mess around with trying to band-aid this issue or adding steps and points-of-failure to my setup.

Opened up the output jack with a tech and we checked all connections are being made. Cleaned the leads, checked soldering, multimeter the jack, et cetera. The jack itself is functioning as it should.

I'm trying to track down either a new motherboard for NE4D, or someone in engineering that knows what specific chip could cause this type of malfunction. I have a tech that is entirely comfortable replacing a specific chip who is a head technician in equipment repair at a major audio/video broadcasting company. Most of his work involves soldering under a microscope on highly sensitive commercial grade audio and video equipment, so working on my rig has been like playing with a lego set for him. However, he doesn't have the time to sit with a scope to map out the motherboard and isolate the problem. We could easily drop a new motherboard if we could get one ordered, or simply replace the specific chip on this if sent.

Any help in the right direction is greatly appreciated!

You should contact Pablo Mastodon ( "pablomastodon" on this forum), US Nord Tech support, via the official channel i.e. US Nord Distributor, see http://www.nordkeyboards.com/distributors

Meantime, just use the headphones out and a Y cable ;)

Hi AOS,

From your description it does seem as though perhaps there may be some failing component in the output stage, but swapping in another mainboard for something like that is like replacing the engine in your car because one spark plug isn't firing. Bad idea economically. And unlike some of "those other folks," Nord PCBs are not mass-produced in Asia at minimal cost, but made in Sweden. You're talking hundreds of dollars.

Nord schematics are not made available to the general public, but depending upon where you are located, I may be able to refer you to someone local to you. Please contact me via my regular work contacts to discuss this matter in greater detail.

Bless, Pablo

Per my OP...
