NE3 - control pedal for sample volume

Postby Tracii » 02 Dec 2018, 16:18

Hi,

I use a Yamaha FC-7 as the organ swell pedal with my Electro 3. Toe down (max vol) is whatever the gain is set to and heel down (min vol) is approx. 30% of that. Is this also how it works when used as sample volume pedal - other than that it goes down to 0 then? I can't check it myself at the moment...

The reason I'm asking is that with my Yamaha MX61 it works quite differently - toe down is always 127 and heel down is 0. Gain is only a starting point when you switch to the sound, but once you're there, you can effectively override it with the pedal.

Swell' is a "specialty" of the B3 emulation engine only, as you can read pn the manual, on all other cases i.e. when used as a Control Pedal for a sound section it controls the volume from 0 to 100%.

Sure, but 100% of what?

As I said, on my MX61 it's 100% of the available volume of the instrument: So, if I have a sound set to 80 out of 127 and another sound set to 100 of 127, because the first one is inherently louder, then the control pedal would move between 0 and 127 on both of them - and NOT between 0 and 80 on the first, and 0 and 100 on the second one.

Which way does the NE3 behave?

100% of that section/program volume you have set, i.e. what you get if you disable the pedal; easier to try it than writing about it anyway ;)

Of course it is.

Just so you know where I'm coming from: My rig is set up at our rehearsal space 30 minutes away (times 2 in heavy traffic ;)). I hoped it would be quicker and greener to ask here than to drive there. :thanks:

Recently, I find myself wanting more volume control than I can get through velocity sensitivity. Having read up on how the MX61 responds to a expression pedal ("toe down" is NOT the same as "pedal disabled"), it turns out I'm going to have to buy a stereo volume pedal for it. So, do I buy 1 or 2? Depends on how the Electro 3 sample engine is configured.

...and here I am.

So once again, thank you very much for helping me out!!!

Sure! That sentence was not meant to push back your question, just to say that sometimes there are things which are harder to describe than try practically, this is one of those imho.

Green first

:thanks:

I played around with the entire setup yesterday, and I'm going to have to eat my words:

I still think the manual can be misread, but as it stands, the Yamaha MX61 does indeed respond to a FC-7 pedal just like that: "toe down" equals "no pedal". Not a problem, though, as I actually think I prefer the slightly smaller travel of the FV-500.
