NE 6 Organize

Postby Papamotif » 15 Jul 2018, 11:53

Hi!

Programming my amazing NE 6 for gigging! I have the latest OS 1.18 installed

BUT! The organize-function doesn´t look or work like it´s described in the manual. I can only ”swap” and ”move” programs.
I want to ”copy” And ”insert”!!!

What is wrong? I´ve searched this forum and read the updatehistory on Nords website without finding anything on this!

Anyone????

Copying is done by selecting the program you want, then press Save (or Save As) and select the position where you want to store it -- and you then have a copy. It will have to get a new name, since they need to be unique across the banks -- so usually it gets a number appended, or you change the name yourself.

As for a pure "insert", I think this is very rare operation to use since it would essentially change the position of all other subsequent programs (in all banks). So if you have organized something in bank B and now work on bank A and do an "insert", then the last program in A would move into bank B, etc -- and the final program in the last bank will be lost.

However, the move operation is maybe what you may want: If you move a program from one location to another, all programs in between the positions will shift one position. That is most often what you want, and not a pure "insert" that pushes ALL programs from some position to the end.

So to give an example, if you have programs A, B, C, D and E in that order, you could select D and 1) move it B's place or 2) swap it with B. This would give you either A, D, B, C, E (move) or A, D, C, B, E (swap). If you want to copy from D to B, you can use the save operation to get A, D', C, D, E (where D' is the same program with a slightly different name).

I think between these 3 operations, you can do all you want, no?

Hey, baekgaard - do the NS3 and NE6 function the same with organization? For my NS3 I think I can only do the Swap function when using Sound Manager (or is there a hidden function to Move instead of Swap?). When using the Organize button on the NS3, I am only able to Move.

Also, I have a problem when moving Programs or Songs via the Organize button (no problems with Sound Manager) and I’m wondering if anyone else experiences this:

I like to keep my Programs in alphabetical order and my Songs in order of the setlist that my band will be playing. If I Move a Program or Song within its respective list using the Organize button, other Programs or Songs get moved out of order as well. I haven’t been able to detect any specific pattern yet (other than it happening when something gets moved more than a few slots), but it happens just about every time. It then becomes a task to get everything back to where it should be.

Does that happen to your NE6 and NS3 as well?

The NE6 and NS3 are different in their organize function, and the NE6 offers both swap and move functions, unlike the NS3. But yes, the swap function is quite nice and would be a welcome addition to the NS3 too.

As for the dis-organization caused by the organize button, I haven't noticed anything like that recently -- but I haven't been looking for it either. I assume you're on 1.40 on your NS3?

Are you saying that if you have something like A, B, C, D, E, F, G, and H and move A to G's place you end up with a random ordering in between (like B, D, C, G, E, F, A, H) or something like that? I would be interested in trying to reproduce such an issue, but would like first to understand what to look for.

Yes, I’m on 1.40 but this also happened on previous versions where there were 50 programs per bank. I just never got around to posting about it. Here is my example:

My custom programs are located from K1-N15. If I create a new program at N21 and try to move it to someplace like M33, then the programs around M33 (before and after) will become jumbled a bit.

Likewise, if I try to move Song 2:04 to 1:17 a bunch of songs before and after 1:17 get jumbled. This happened to me at my gig last night when we made some last minute changes to the setlist.

In both cases, each Song or Program remains in the general vicinity, but some are moved earlier and some are moved later. Again, I haven’t been able to detect a pattern. Of course, when I do it I’m usually preparing for a gig so there’s not a lot of time for troubleshooting and I usually just use Sound Manager to avoid the issue at all.

Thanks for offering to try out on your NS3. I really appreciate it!

I have some "mess" in some of my lists of programs that could potentially have been caused by something like what you describe, but as I haven't noticed at the time I may have re-organized the programs, I'm not sure what the cause has been. I'll try to do a more controlled experiment and see what happens, and let you know.

@ajstan: I've made a "controlled" test here, and have found issues with the resulting order after moving things with the organise function; it can indeed cause some programs to accidentally change their position/order. I think I have an almost reproducible scenario, and have sent a bug report to Nord. So hopefully it can be fixed also in a future release :-)

Thanks baekgaard. Your efforts are greatly appreciated. Good to know that it wasn’t something I was doing wrong. It happens with both Programs and Songs, so hopefully both can get fixed at the same time.
