How to scroll through the patches without sounding them?

Postby Ivar77 » 04 Aug 2021, 20:51

Hi,

I have a sequencer playing a loop on my Nord Electo 6D
All fine.

Now I want change a patch while looping, changing for example a piano into a vibraphone.
So I hit Shift List on the piano section, to scroll through the list to the vibraphone at the end.
While scrolling al the instruments between the two patches are sounding.
Is there a way to avoid this behavior?

I would like to scroll to the desired patch and then hit 'enter' or something likt that to confirm.
Is it possible on the Nord E6?

You cannot do that from the panel but you can use MIDI CCs to change the piano type/model/variation in one shot (see MIDI CC list on NE6 manual) and you can include them in a sequence (main or a dedicated one)

Picking up from what max said, you can also use MIDI Program Changes to navigate directly from any Nord Program to any other. You can likewise include those Program Changes in a sequence, or invoke them from any other MIDI source that supports sending Program Changes (another PC/Mac/iOS/Android app, another keyboard, various pedals, etc.).

Thanks, both of you.
Unfortunately, i would not change the sound programming in the sequence, but change it on the fly in a live setting. Improvising.
So the sequence gives for example a piano, and i will change it to a epiano or harpsichord if i want to at the very moment.

I understood that. I *think* that's what Max was referring to when he mentioned a "dedicated" sequence... though whether you could run a dedicated sequence to change Program while *also* running you main looping sequence is beyond my knowledge (I've never used sequencers). Maybe some sequencer apps let you run more than one sequence at a time? Or maybe you can run two sequencers at the same time? Moving along to my followup, I was suggesting that you could send that Program Change from some other device or app, regardless of what your sequencer was doing.

So for example, let's say you have something sending your sequence into the Nord's USB MIDI connection. You should be able to simultaneously send a Program Change from something else into the Nord's 5-pin MIDI connection. That something else could be a Tech 21 MIDI Mouse, a Rocktron MIDI Mate, a Behringer FCB1010, a smartphone running any of numerous apps, a second keyboard that has the ability to send Program Changes to outboard gear, whatever. These all let you invoke patches directly without invoking all the other patches between your current one and the one you want. The pedals do it by patch number. A smartphone could give you on-screen buttons to tap that have the name of the sound you want to invoke, once you program that on-screen button to send the proper Program Change for the desired sound.

Nord actually used to have this capability built right into some of their boards... the Nord Stage 2 and 2 EX had what they called "pending load." Unfortunately, that's not on the E6, or even on the NS3.
