Boring plastic noise

Postby hadrien » 24 Jul 2011, 20:51

The key action of my NE3 is quite noisy and emit plastic and sometimes spring noises on almost every key over the keyboard. This happens since the early days and it does't get any better with time...

This is very boring, cause i can hear it when i play with normal volume level on my amplifier.

I am quite disapointed by such cheap quality of the mechanics, regarding the reputation and the price of the instrument.

Does every NE3 has the same issue ? i am curious about what users think of the overal quality of the mechanics of this keyboard.

Finally, is there anything i can do to reduce those clanky and springy noises ?

Hello Hadrien and welcome to the forum :)

I'm afraid that such noises are normal for the action on your NE3. It has never been a problem for me personally, but I recognize that it can be a bit anoying sometimes.

You can read more about it in this tread: nord-stage-forum-f3/squeaking-spring-noises-t164.html#p774

Down in the bottom of the thread Johannes links to a text about how you can fix the noises.

Best regards
Cbas

Hello Hadrien,
Welcome to the forum!
There might be something wrong with your NE3.
I just did a comparison of the keybed noises from the few instruments that I have left in my studio, and my NE3 is less noisy than any of the following instruments:
Roland D-50
Roland D-70
Kurzweil K250
Korg M3-88
Korg 01/WFD
Moog MemoryMoog Plus "not mine, I'm re-capping it for a friend".

None of these instruments have a reputation for being cheaply made, or inferior quality.

Cheers, Hanon

i'm gonna try to open the unit and check it key after key... and maybe add a slight touch of lube. hope that cosmetic session will give a better result.

Doesn't every NE3-owner have keys with spring noise? And isn't there a way to fix it without opening the NE3?

My NE3 is noisy too: it's quite annoying but I am afraid to open the keyboard, so i'm getting used with the spring noises.

The keys of my NE3 are very noisy, too. (@Hanon: I own a 01W pro, and they are similarly noisy...). Indeed, when I first played/touched it in the shop, I thought: "Oh my god, how loud is this?". But then I decided to turn up the volume and ignore that...

As Cbas posted above, there has been already several discussions on this point. Basically, the springs might be a little offset and therefore touch the keys in a way that gives kind of a squeaking noise. In the topic above or here: http://www.proaudioe.com/pages/nord-tec ... EYSYNDROME you can find an easy way of fixing this issue. First, simply moving the springs a bit can get rid of the issue (which is what I did), second a bit of lube might help if you still get the noise.
It is really a very easy DIY, mainly due to the excellent build quality of the Nord Keyboard (Just compare the screws they use to Roland or Korgs!!).

My new NE3 has exactly the same problem. And what I can add to the discussion is that my new Motif XF6 keybed is absolutely silent in comparison. Amplifier volume must be pumped up a lot to cover the noises. A curiosity: is e.g. the C2 keybed noisy as well?

Hi guys,

I opened several keyboards and the best available ''lube'' is ''protec''.
It is an expensive goody used by piano tuners (me too) to get rid off sqeeks and slow mechanical parts in a real piano.
It does not affect the wood and other precious materials.
