Triggering Sample with a Pad or with The Snare

Postby Quai34 » 19 Jan 2018, 06:47

Hi Guys,
Currently, I'm working a lot on more dance songs with my new band and on most of them, there is a Claps or a sort of Gated Snare/Claps on the songs...I have the samples on my P2K and VX5080 but I realized that I'm doing the job of my Drummer in using one of my hand to do it....It's ok at the beginning of the song when I don't have any other parts but at the end, a lot of time I have to give up the claps/samples...
So, how can my drummer be able to trigger my sample via his Snare? Kind of a Triggering Sensor to attached to it? Or another Pad close to his snare? Sorry to ask, I'm not a dummer so, I posted that on Nord Drum Forum as I'm assuming, a lot of guys who owns a Nord Drum should sue it the way I would like...
Thanks to let me know, I found this:
https://www.long-mcquade.com/20311/Drum ... er_Pad.htm
And this:
https://www.long-mcquade.com/54756/Drum ... rigger.htm
But it seems that I will need a sort of midi box to transfer the action of the pad to a midi on/off note right?
And for this one, I will have to use a little box that transform the usb in Midi, right? Because I don't what to run any computer in my set up...

Sincerely

Triggers usually require a trigger-to-MIDI converter. I haven't yet seen "all in one" solutions.

What about something like an Alesis PercPad (discontinued but still available online)?

You can use its internal sounds but also trigger external ones, thanks to its MIDI OUT; you can modify the MIDI Notes associated to each of the 4 pads, to map them to your samples.

Another simple solution could be the use of a Roland SPD ONE WAV pad, you may load your samples in it and let the drummer play them directly from the pad, with no need for any MIDI connection

I didn't know the Alexis percpad but I will look at it, thanks.

Hi Quai!

The Percpad is probably a good idea, cheap, it has MIDI out, and a trigger input in case your drummer wants to use a drum trigger or small pad. On the Samplepad models, you can import your own samples, still much cheaper than a Roland SPD-SX or Yamaha DTX Multi 12.

The Roland SPD::ONE WAV has one pad, you can import your own samples onto it, no MIDI out though..
The other models in this series have a fixed set of sounds, but you can import 1 sample of your own, the ELECTRO model has some retro handclap sounds, might be interesting,.

The Roland TM-2 drum module is very small, not extremely expensive, has MIDI out, can import user samples, but you will need a drum pad like the BT-1 you mentioned, or a trigger like the ones from roland or ddrum.

And of course the Nord Drum (the first model) is quite a compact drum module too, the synth can produce some cool sounds of it’s own, has MIDI out. With a ND2 you can possibly even replicate those clap sounds. The ND2 is probably harder to find second hand, and more expensive.

Cheers,
Albert

I just read the manual for the Roland new Pads, Electro and so on, they seems to be awesome especially because with the variation you get other sounds than just the ones that are written on the devices....
But you said that they don't have midi out but they have a USB and it says on the manual that it could be used for sending or receiving midi...So, if it's midi via USB, I will need a USB to midi din converter right? Or better, a wifi to midi din...
Also, if they send midi, I could use it both ways, with the internal sounds and in sending midi? But could I send program changes as well? My drummer is very good but way way far from being a tech savy so, if I send a program change to the device, he might not even have to change the settings manually...age reason I wanted to trigger a clap sample from the snare is because most of the dance songs have a clap+Snare but the Electro pad have one like this so, half the problem solved...
I'm still trying to find the answer but wanted to ask if you know....
Anyway, thanks for the infos, they are very good, I will just have to see which route I will go but even if the new Roland are more expensive, they are very small and can fit almost anywhere...

Hey Quai!
I agree they are interesting looking units! I didn’t know they have MIDI over USB
Like most MIDI over USB devices, it can’t serve as ‘host’, so you can’t connect a regular USB-MIDI interface to the USB port. You either need a computer or tablet, or something like the Kenton MIDI USB Host mkII, that basically provides DIN MIDI ports to an instrument that only has MIDI over USB. The SPD::ONE manual doesn’t say much about MIDI, if you can send/receive program changes, or which MIDI channel has to be used etc. Perhaps check a Roland forum, I did find this https://youtu.be/ZHwZKgYiop0 review, near the end the guy says you need to switch it into MIDI mode, which turns ‘local off’ (if you hit the pad, the unit won’t produce sound, unless you route it back through MIDI). I think it’s easier to let the drummer himself switch between the sounds with the knob.

Hi,
Yes, you're right, it will be simplier to ask my Drummer to switch sounds manually....Why do we, us, keyboards players, are always the more "techy" musicians, even with instruments that are not ours?....
