Nord Beat 3 app & Nord Drum 3P........Difficulties

Postby Takejazz2036 » 02 May 2019, 09:24

Good morning Ladies & Gentlemen,

Forgive me as i'm new to using the Nord Beat App and using Midi in General.

I'm having great difficulty setting up my ipad (4th Gen) with my Nord Beat 3 App with Nord 3P.
I have an iconnect Midi to Lightning Cable, Midi out on Nord Beat & Midi in on Nord 3P.

The App is recognising the iconnect in the midi device section but i'm not sure how i'm supposed to continue from there.

I'm aware that the midi channel and notes need to be matched also.

Any videos or step by step instructions (every single tiny step, lol)

Any help would be most appreciated.

Thank you kindly

Update on my problem to share some more info on my dilemma.

Nordbeat3 midi out (iPad) > Nord Drum midi in connection. That part I think is right? Using an iconnect lightning to midi connection.

I have set my global channel to 10 or nord3p and matched my midi channel to 10 on the App.....So far so good?
Then I have set all midi channels on the 3P to Channel off (Ch OF)......right?

My next dilemma is selecting the midi devices part on the App correctly.
Clock sync, off, send, receive? When send is selected there is no play button.......?

Please help. I'm going nuts trying to figure this out.

My apologies first, total Newb!!

Thank you kindly

Hi Takejazz2036!

In MIDI Devices menu select the iConnect interface as output device, the rest of your setup seems correct, you have to make sure you connect the OUT connector of the iConnect to the MIDI IN of your 3p

-Clock Sync can be used to synchronise external devices with the tempo of the app, or let the app be a slave to external clock and start/stop triggers (that's why the play button disappears if you select receive), select Off, you don't need that if you just want the 3p to play your drum patterns

If you programmed a pattern in the app and then press play, you should see channel light blinking and hear drum sounds

Cheers,
Albert

Thank you kindly for your reply Albert.

Unfortunately this has not worked. Am I missing something?
There is no audio or visual midi signal when playing.

Again I followed each step.

Midi out App to midi in to Nord3.
Global channel 10 on the Nord3 to midi channel 10 on the App.
All individual midi channels off on the Nord3.

I've selected the clock sync off and made sure the iconnect was selected to output.

Any ideas of what I may be missing here?

Thank you kindly again for your time Albert.

Regards
Matt

Hi,
If the global MIDI channel and notes match with the app, it should work.
Does your MIDI interface have LEDs for each port? If so, do you see any activity there when playing a drum pattern in the app? If it's an interface with fixed MIDI cables, try the using the other MIDI connector, just in case they are mislabeled. If you have one of the larger models, perhaps the MIDI cable is broken, try another one if you can. Do you have any other synths or samplers you can test the MIDI interface with? If the interface and cabling is ok, then perhaps there is something wrong with your 3p,
Succes!
Albert

There are no LEDs on the interface. I have attached a photo of it so you can see the type.

When you mention matching the notes, what do you mean?
I thought the individual channels were set to OFF so I didn't have to match the notes from the nord to the app?

I a bit confused by this.

Thanks for helping Albert

Hi,
If you open the MIDI settings in the app, you'll see a list of MIDI note numbers, a different one for each of the 6 drum channels. These are the MIDI notes that will be sent on the MIDI channel that you have set in the app (usually 10) once you press play, or play the pads in the app.

Now on the 3p, press Shift + MIDI a couple of times until you see [nt.xx] where xx is the note number that is set for that drum channel, use the channel selection buttons to check which note number is set for each drum channel, if the note numbers do not correspond to the ones listed in the app, use the knob to match them, (alternatively change them in the app so that they match with the 3p). The factory defaults are note 60 (central C) for drum channel 1, note 62 for drum channel 2, 64 for #3, 65 for #4, 67 for #5, 69 for #6. It doesn't matter which note numbers you choose, as long as they match with the app..

The 3p only responds to these 6 MIDI notes received on the Global MIDI channel, if you send other notes to the 3p, or use a different MIDI channel than the Global MIDI channel, the 3p won't do anything.

Hope this helps!
Albert

Thanks Albert.
How do you save the individual midi notes to the selected channel?
for example, channel 1 - nt60 then I go on to channel 2 - nt62 then when I go back to check if channel 1 is matched with nt60 it's gone back to the last note nt62.
Can you save the notes to each channel?

Hmm, that sounds strange, so you set note number 60 for drum channel 1, (the LED of drum channel 1 was lit), then pressed the > channel select button to go to drum channel 2 (and checked the LED of drum channel 2 is lit) set it to [nt.62], then go back to drum channel 1 with the < drum channel select button, the display then says [nt.62] ?! There is no special procedure to save those settings, they are stored automatically, that is, you do have to Exit the menu before switching off the unit, that's all..

Ok so I have now got the midi notes the same as the nord midi notes and on the correct channels.
Sorry, very school boy error of not checking each channel using the Channel select button.

So, each midi note is the same. We are both on global channel 10 and midi channel 10.
Interface iconnect is output to the nord midi input.

Volume up. Sequencer playing....... Still nothing.

I'm lost here. Unfortunately I don't have anything else to test the midi interface with.

If it did work, I should get audio straight out of the iPad speakers right?
No need for additional speaker or monitor hook ups?
