Nord 3P CC10 Pan

Post by 8bit Barry »

No matter what I try I cannot get the Pan parameter to respond to CC 10, like it shows in the manual
The Nord is in individual channel mode and I want to be able to place the pads in the stereo field on the fly from a Digitakt, which is controlling it via CC's

I set other CC's and most respond, but CC10 does not.

Can anyone help?

Hi, I'm clueless to be honest

-Perhaps try controlling it from a MIDI controller, or check if the digitakt is really outputting the CC10 messages.

-Can you actually hear your 3p in stereo; are both audio channels from the 3p connected and panned L and R in your mix?

Cheers,
Albert

I really do believe my 3P has firmware issues. The amount of times I need to hard reset because it’s frozen, or just behaves really weirdly. I set CC10 on all 6 drum parts, It’s even labelled PAN in the Digitakt, and nothing works until 11pm this evening.

I thought it may be a global channel only function, like automating the effects types, but that’s not the case. Now it works.

Mine is not stable at all. I never solved this weird pad follow problem either. Nord are adamant that Ableton is sending it controller data, but it isn’t the case. I even tested it with an empty template and it still does the same thing, locking the pad follow to Pad 1 and stopping live editing. The only way I can use it with a sequencer is to run midi to it from the Digitakt sequencer where it behaves itself to a degree.

Well, yes, perhaps firmware, or a faulty unit, maybe someone with a 3p can chime in..

Perhaps there is still something to be found in your setup, or MIDI settings
-Could there be a MIDI loop going on? Is the 3p's MIDI output connected to the MIDI input of your digitakt?

-Make sure the digitakt is only sending the CCs to the individual MIDI channels. If CC messages are also sent to the global MIDI channel, they might clash/conflict with messages sent to the individual channels, CCs on the global MIDI channel are directed to the drum channel that is in focus/selected.

Only using the Midi In on the Nord to stop any confusion.
The Digitakt is using tracks 9-14 set to Midi 1-6 on each track so there can’t be any confusion.
The main thing I set the CC’s to receive only on the Nord.
I have switched the Global channel to OFF on the Nord

Not sure what else to do… I might enquire on the Elektron page and see if anyone can enlighten me.

Frustrating. Do you have a MIDI monitor app to check what the digitakt is outputting?
If you send CC messages per note with p-locks, perhaps the order and timing of the messages are important for the 3p to respond properly. According to the thread "Parameter locking not working with external instrument" on Elektronauts, the digitakt sends the note first. I'd say that CCs to control sound parameters ideally should come before the note on. That is also how I control the ND2 from my DAW or other gear. On the other hand, one would expect that if a CC comes too late to have an effect on one note, it should affect the next, unless the digitakt resets CC 10 to a default value between notes for some reason.
I think monitoring the MIDI output of the Digitakt is the best way to find out what is going on..
