Yes, outgoing midi travels on the global channel, individual drum channel midi channels on the Nord are for incoming data only.
It was my recollection that there were no MIDI NOTE OFF messages, but rather MIDI NOTE ON messages with velocity = zero. The Midi-Ox readout was a bit of a surprise to me...
