The nord organ

Postby lordy » 31 Aug 2017, 08:18

Hello, i had a b3 and a leslie, now i'd like to make the nord organ engine more "liquid" sounding.
I did test comparison with the vb3 for example. Sure, the sound of the nord is more accurate, more consistant, the leakage is very good to me, but it is hard to approach the feeling of the vb3 when i play.
I had a mojo too before, and like the vb3 1.00 there is something liquid, when i play. Nord organ sounds flat when you don't touch the eq, and the playing is not as organic as some clones.
But the base of the sound is good. So it is due to the nord leslie simulation, too woody, dull, i don't know.

Question, how do you do to make your organ sounds even better, get it more liquid, more hammond ?

You could always buy a real Leslie. Personally I never thought the hammond sounded great without a Leslie, Jon Lord's Marshalls included.

The best you can hope for out of a Leslie sim is a darn well recorded Leslie which is poor substitute.

I own a Hammond sk-1, a Hammond xk-1 and a Nord 5d. In this "battle", the Nord sounds a little "harsh", but in the band-context, nobody - except the Organist himself - notices the difference.
the ordians probably will say:"Oh, an organ!"

I tried them all without any Leslie (internal sim) and with my Neo Ventilator I.
The best "B3-sound", but heavy weighted, comes out of my XK-1 using the neo.
The second best sound Comes out of my sk-1 without (!) the neo - only internal sim.
The Nord sounds great with the neo.

yes, with a real leslie or a neo, the nord could sounds very good, cause the hammond sound in nord sound very good, it is hammond, with artefacts, with noise, with the body of the organ.
The simulation of the leslie makes this harsh sound, too woody, not liquid and fluid enough. So i'd like to play the nord with a neo, or a leslie,

..but after good working on nord organ sound, i can say that it is the leslie simulation the guilty. It eats good frequencies, ater that rotary the sound is dull, little.
I think in a neo, it gona works great.

I use a real Hammond and Leslie at home, but on the gig I run my NS2 organ through a Neo Ventilator in stereo and it sounds awesome. I have been experimenting with a Lounsberry Tall & Fat pedal to add some additional drive to the sound as well.

I noticed something quite cool.
When i set the compressor to 6-7, fast, on the ns3, it produces a very nice tube saturation, more subtil than the drive effect a little harsh to my ears. It brings the growl of hammond, like when i changed a tube on my old b3.

Something that has been replied many times but perhaps needs to be played "one more time!" in this string is simply this: The sound that anyone perceives is ultimately and at some point unique to each individual. Sure, there are some common things that most will agree on. But face it; Even if there's 1 ear out of a 1000 that says, "I like this instead of that", who's to say that ear is wrong. right? The best response that anyone who's looking for help in achieving a certain sound, is from someone who simply understands the verbiage being used, and agrees with the descriptions, and is looking for the same thing. What happens there is, 2 people (or more) agree, and I think that's fine. That doesn't make it gospel. I've played B3's and Leslies all my life, all styles of music. In fact, I've got a killer B and a couple 122's in my house (which is where they'll stay forever). I've been gigging with a C2D now for a few years, and personally believe it will stand up next to any B ! Mast of the catz I play with agree how amazing it sounds. (I believe the key is how you dial it in with you amp/speaker system). What really kills me, is the occasional bleeding heart that just has to say, "yeah, but there's nothing like the real thing!". My usual response is, "which one, Jackass?" Line up 10 B's and Leslies, put my C2D rig in the mix, and I guarantee, in a blind test where you have to pick say, the top 3 - I'll be in there.

I agree, I have my C2 updated with the C2D engine and I can't believe how it sounds good....To me anyway, so....The only thing that I might try in the future is the Leslie Studio 12....But you have to put Microphones on it...

I normally play my C2D thru a QSC K12. Tons of power, tons of bass, and when dialed into the room correctly - the Les simulator is beautiful. On occasion, I'll use a Leslie 3300. Now, we're talking Killer of Killers!
