Something loose is rolling around inside my C2

Postby Dennis » 06 Jan 2013, 07:51

What is the best way to open the case to inspect? There is something loose rolling around inside. I noticed it after the last gig. I'm afraid of something shorting out.
It's insured but I would have to send it off with a long turnaround time and have a fairly tight gig schedule.
This C2 is only about 1 year old and I have always kept it in a nice hard case, taking extreme caution in transporting.
Is this a common problem?
I hope this is the proper forum for my question.
thanks
Dennis

It is :)

It's not a common problem, but it just so happens someone with a Nord Electro had a similar issue very recently. Have a look at this thread: nord-electro-forum-f9/plastic-piece-loose-inside-keyboard-t4201.html

It is of course better not to do it yourself, but sometimes you might need to do so anyway. If you can use a screwdriver and can carefully/patiently open your Nord you should be able to do it though. This is however completely at your own risk and you can certainly do damage to your instrument (the flat cables between the top panel and the keybeds are the most easily damaged parts when doing this).

I've never had a C2 open myself so can't speak from experience, but I expect it to require a procedure similar to what you'd have on an Electro, Stage, Lead, etc. It is much higher though and has two manuals, so there might be more than 1-2 screws on the bottom you need to remove.

In the post with the picture of the electro (see the thread I linked earlier), I give a short procedure. I think you need to remove the side panels, the row of screws on the back (the big ones) and the 'odd ones out' on the bottom (probably roughly in the middle, left-right). Don't remove any of the screws used for mounting the keybed(s) to the bottom (their mounted in rows of multiple screws). Once you've removed the right screws, the top panel should lift right off. I think all the screws you need to remove will have a fine thread on them (they screw into metal). If you remove screws with a very coarse thread (self-tappers), you probably removed some screw that's part of the keybed - screw it back, but make sure you don't overtighten it (that might crack the plastic frame of the keybed).

It would be helpful for me if you could make (and post) a picture of the bottom of your C2 (ideally showing which screws you had to remove), a picture of the inside (close-up of the main circuit board, I'm curious as to what's in that particular Nord), a picture showing the two manuals and how they are fixed to the instrument. If there are less than four flat cables going from the keybeds to the main circuit board, I'd also be interested in a shot of both ends of any cables that do connect the keybeds to the main circuit board. A shot of the bottom of the top panel showing the standoff(s) that rest on the bottom of the C2 would be interesting too.

Since you seem to be living in the US, you could contact Nord Tech Support USA (http://www.proaudioe.com/pages/nord-tec ... rt-usa.php) about this. Pablo might have some ideas and more information.

Just unscrew one of the sidepanels.
And se if the piece falls out. P

Something loose is rolling around the outside of my C2!! Oh, it's my fingers. Does anybody know how to tighten them up?

"Pablo might have some ideas and more information"

Him? All he ever says is "trumpet a lot, run around, knock some trees over and run a tusk through it, and it'll be fine". And then he wants a truckload of tender saplings and leaves.

flmc59 has it right. The dual manual series are constructed quite differently from the Electros/Stages. Indeed, pulling all the screws from one end or the other will free that end cheek and allow visual inspection and/or to turn the thing on it's side and try to coax the offending contraband out. Please drop me a line at:

if you'd like more detailed info/advice re: warranty, etc.

note to Mooser: tender saplings and leaves are for kids. It's Amarula I'm after ;-)

It's Amarula you're after? Wasn't she Winthrop's sister in "The Music Man"? Also known as Sclerocarya birrea? I stick mostly to willow bark and water-plants myself, and bagels. But I will seek out this Amarula fruit, and give it a try.

And if anything is rolling around inside my C2, I'll take off the side panels as you and flmc suggest. And if I drink enough Amarula I'll roll around outside my C2. In point of fact (look, I know it doesn't really fit, but how often do I get to use an expression like that?) liquor was just de-regulated in Washington state, where I'm immured, and it might be possible to get a bottle of it. Previously all liquor was sold in State-operated stores and variety was restricted. They also legalised pot, more or less. Maybe I'll give it a cautious try one day. Nah, I wouldn't want to have a bum voyage, as the hippies say. But don't mind me, Pablo, If I don't get drunk all I do is wonder whether my life, which really wasn't worth living before I got a C2, is now even worse since I don't have a C2D yet. :(

Given Mooser's reply above, I was wondering if Clavia properly test their Nords.

P.s. sorry for further derailing this thread, I need some sleep and everything seems funny, even my forum avatar :shh:

"Given Mooser's reply above, I was wondering if Clavia properly test their Nords."

I think they do, but the problem is, they have no way of checking their cutomers. I walked in, said "Gimme a C2" wrote a check, and boom, I had one. Nothing Nord could do about it. I'd like to get a C2D, but I'm in no hurry. I think that one will be around as long as the Hammond console was. It'll simply become the standard instument.

Check out the factory tour on the Nord homepage. It's a lot about testing.
