Piano Voices for Nord C2D?

Postby old guy » 19 Apr 2014, 21:58

Still on the fence between the Nord C2D and Hammond/Suzuki competitor.

My interest in one of these is to have a 'clean, compact' keyboard organ set-up that can be a part of my likely assisted living arrangement in the near future. I really have no interest in the European pop organs and just passing interest in the Hammond organs. It is the pipe organ and to a lesser extent the piano that are my 'thing'.

Just wondering if the Nord has some nice piano voices and/or some can be imported and played from their selection in some manner?

Of course the best answer would be if the factory voices in the Farfisa/Vox section could be deleted and piano/pipe organ voices substituted. Probably just a 'pipe dream', but I just wanted to ask.

The answer is: NO, C2D is only about organs and organ voices cannot be substituted (if you check the official Nordkeyboards site, the specs of C2D are pretty clear about this)

Which H/S model? It's OK to name it on here, we're not Nord fanatics! The Sk1 has a very good pipe organ, and the piano is adequate, however, have you checked out the Roland C-200?

It is out of production now, but I imagine that you could pick up a used one for around $1000. It has a SUPERB pipe organ, an adequate piano, and also a Celesta & Harpsichord. There are no drawbars, just switches that act as organ stops.

Just thought I'd complicate things for you!

I'd go with SSM on this - the C2 isn't the best choice if you want to do organ, piano and other stuff all in the one box. I bought my C2D as I have a stage piano with everything else in that I want. I need the B3 and the pipe organs, and the Vox and Farf are nice to have, so it's great for me. I think the Roland would be superb if you want good organ plus the piano/harpsi stuff. I nearly bought the C-200's predecessor, but as it happens my dithering for a few more years (And being short of cash!) led me to the C2D instead.

No, six-string-man -- I hadn't considered the Roland "C" line because the local Roland keyboard dealer sometime back indicated these were available only in Europe. It was the same, a bunch of years ago when I bought my Roland/Rogers W-50. Then, I was made aware of that model via a mail flyer/catalog that came with a small discount so I bought it. It turned out very well for me.

You can always "MIDI" one or both of the manual through a synth module and get piano and other voices with the addition of only a small box. If you don't mind playing them on the Nord organ keyboard.

I'm with Mooser (below) . Just MIDI from your C2D into any number of Piano modules. Now you've go the best of both worlds, without another complete keyboard to set up.

Perhaps a solution is to get ahold of a sound module (of your choice) with piano voices. MIDI out from the C2D. Then just choose which voices you want to "hear"; either C2D - or - piano module.

You can actually do both... I do this with my C1.

I have a small piano module velcro-ed to the top of the unit. I set the Midi Channel to 2 and have a C1 patch that mutes the lower manual for organ... allowing me to play organ on the top manual and dial in piano on the lower manual. Of course you can setting a patch to do the reverse - and trigger piano on Channel 1 from the top manual and play organ on the bottom manual.

It's certainly not the best keyboard for a piano feel - but for the 2 or 3 songs that I need a piano for on a gig, it's a very workable solution.

Very cool, indeed! I'd be curious to hear what the combination of say upper C1 organ (assumed soloing) plus the piano sounds 'together' sound like.
