Export Panel Configuration (drawbar settings)| C2D

Postby 2xbasssist » 01 Apr 2019, 01:49

Hi dear Nord users,

I used to have a C2. I remember that years ago, when I switched from C2 to C2D, I just copied the LED drawbar lights to copy the drawbar/perc, etc, settings to the new C2D.

This year, I bought a Hammond XK-5 and I'd like to copy my custom made sounds from C2D to the XK-5. Since C2D has no drawbar LED lights I am not able to replicate each sound.

Unfortunately "Export Sound List" option at Nord Sound Manager, is disabled for C2/C2D.

Do you have any idea how could I find out drawbar settings made on each patch on the C2D? I have to copy about 80 patches (for lower and upper manual) so please, don't reply to do it by ear.

I would appreciate your help.

Thank you!

"Export sound list" is for exporting names, not settings, so it wouldn't help you anyway.

What you can do is sending a Controller Dump (see manual, MIDI Functions section) to the PC running a MIDI Monitor then, based on the association between controller numbers and parameters (see manual, same section) you can "read" the values of each parameter.

Thank you very much dear Maxpiano for your reply.

I did what you suggested, downloaded an App called "SysEx Librarian" (for OS X) and the import/export process were successful. I selected DUMP ALL, to save all the Programs saved on the C2D. Now all the Programs that are on the C2D, were sent as Sysex data to my computer, and saved.

Good. Now, I'll have to translate all that hexadecimal data to "readable" numbers.

Not all the data on each program is in hexadecimal, so copy-paste the whole text displayed on each program, on a "hexadecimal to text" calculator, does not work. Do you know any "bulk" way to do this?

Thank you once more!!

Hey MaxPiano, and other Users from this Forum,

I did some translations with online converters from Hexadecimal to Text, and realized, that the Hexadecimal strings, says the same nonsense text that shows SysexLibrarian separated by a column.

As an example, this is the text I receive from one program:

How in the world, as a human, could know what is the drawbar configuration for this file?

Thank you!

You are just representing the file in hexadecimal and your task is to find out where in that collection of bytes is the setting for a particular parameter.
You could save a patch several times with different settings of a single drawbar (otherwise the settings should be the same for all the other knobs and switches).
Then run some hexa file comparison program like 'cmp' or 'colordiff' or 'vimdiff' or similar to find out what has changed across the saved files which differ only in one position of a drawbar.
For starters, what will be different is: the name, near the start, the setting you changed and the checksum, possibly at the end. There could be a time stamp as well somewhere and manufacturer or version number.
One problem that you might encounter is that several parameters could be packed in the same byte and so you will have to do lots of trials to make sure that you can identify what is really going on.
Then repeat for all the other parameters.

Good luck!

I forgot... that is assuming that the file is not encrypted!

Thank you Mr_-G- for your reply.

Let me see if I understand what you explained: Thinking positive and assuming that the file is not encrypted and, after being successful in detecting which data correspond to the first drawbar in the upper manual, after saving 9 different patches (one with first drawbar in 0, next in 1 until reaching 8) and then analyze the difference in data, I will have to save 324 test presets in total : 9 (each step on one drawbar) x 9 (each single drawbar) x 2 (A+B set of drawbars per manual) x 2 (lower manual drawbars)... Is that right?

Those 'hexa file comparison programs' that you mentioned, compare changes only between two files? If so, it will take me a lot of time! If that's the only method to do it, I definitely prefer to do it by ear.

Anyway, thank you once for your reply.

Or.....Do you know if C2 shares the same backup file extension as the C2D?

Because perhaps I could ask a friend of mine to borrow me a C2 (with LED drawbars) for one day, install my sound set to the C2, and just watch the lights on each drawbar as i move from patch to patch! That would be the easiest way, I think.

What do you guys think? Any C2 user here that could confirm C2 backup file extension, please?
C2D file extension is nc2b.

Sorry I missed you follow up question. Yes you will need to do a binary comparison of the files. And yes it will probably take many trials. Most likely you can reduce the number of test significantly by setting the drawbars to, let's say, 1 and to 8 per drawbar and work out what would be the values in between and test that. Perhaps the drawbar settings are stored sequentially, so that could reduce the tests, too.
You can use the same approach to see where the files differ between C2 and C2D if saving the same initialized program.
