They sound fine to me. Nord sampled a real rhodes, so it sounds just like one... WHat else do you need?

I'm very happy w/ Nord Rhodes. Played some Motif patches the other day - amazed how much better and REAL the Nord sounds.

Korg, Kurzweil, Yamaha, Casio, Kawai, etc. all sample real Rhodes... they're not all equally authentic to hear/play for a wide variety of reasons... plus there's personal taste, people can even prefer the sound of one real Rhodes over another. If sampling a real Rhodes was all you needed, Nord could get by with one Rhodes sample instead of over a dozen sample sets from about a half dozen different Rhodes (plus different EQs and a variety of amp emulations).

Ironically, perhaps, one of the highly regarded Rhodes emulations isn't even based on samples, there's the modeled Rhodes in the Crumar Seven/Gemini/Mojo61.

We could also all ask ourselves why do we need all these authentic Rhodes sounds anyway. Very little modern music is using the Rhodes, and yeah, if we are playing the old stuff in a cover band it's nice to have one good emulation on hand, but it's also possible we've fetishized the mythical quest for the perfect Rhodes sample.

If one wants THE PERFECT RHODES SOUND that badly, then one can always buy a Rhodes. A good refurbished one (able to reach the lofty peaks in sound we are demanding here) will cost close to $3500:

A cheaper Rhodes will have lots of "character," which can be a catch-all word for dropped keys, mis-tuned bars, fritzy electronics, and shredded tolex:

Hmm, suddenly the Nord is doing a fine job after all.

Well said Gambold ! My background is with piano and I'm loving the Rhodes samples.
I've listened to the sound link from the Chicago Electric Piano shop which you posted... I'm curious as to the vamp demonstrated..sounds like a version of What'd I Say (Ray Charles)

Can anyone verify ? or enlighten me ?

thanks, Allan

Whooo, the restauration is awesome.... Besides having a very nice sound, the joy to have a nice real, vintage instrument is part of the deal too....
