Re: "Synth Pianos" are available officially

I just wonder - what is the rules for recording/converting sounds from other manufacturers? - I have a Yamaha MOX6 and it would have been nice to have some of the best Motif sounds from that into my Nord Stage 2. I understand I can sample myself, but if Nord make the sample and make it available for everyone, do they have to pay Yamaha?, or are the sounds from DX7 so old that they are not copyrighted anymore?

Hej No!

Just remember the difference between a *.nsmp and a *.npno file ... ;)

I don't think the age of the instrument that makes a difference. AFAIK it's hard to enforce copyright on a particular 'sound' (as opposed to a melody). Clavia's been very careful to slap some legal disclaimers on there:

Nord Official Site wrote:All product names used are trademarks of their respective owners, and in no way constitutes an association or affiliation with Nord Keyboards. All trademarks are solely used to identify the products whose sound was studied during the development of the piano sound."

Clavia's been using Hammond Organ and Rhodes samples for ages, and have built several product lines almost entirely relying on them, so if anyone was going to pursue them they'd have done it by now! Still, you never know lawyers. I think get 'em while they're hot, before Yamaha puts a cease and desist order on Clavia!
And now for something completely different...

Harley Davidson fought that battle when Asian bike makers began engineering specifically to try to sound like Harleys...

And I thought you were kidding!

I loaded the two DX pianos today. Really good and well made samples.
To my taste, they got the layers/sensitivity spot on with the FullTines, it plays great.

Sadly one of the grand pianos had to be replaced with the small sample version, but I was expecting that.
