Sample / Program compatibitilies amongs Nord

Postby Simo283 » 10 Mar 2019, 10:39

Hi folks

I have a NE5, I'm quite new in using Nord instrument.

is there a way to "translate" a sample or program developed for a specific Nord instrument into another Nord one?
E.g: from Stage to Electro, or from Electro 3 to Electro 5.

I ask because I found on this forum a user sample which has been developed for NS2 and I was wondering if there was a way to use it on my NE5HP.

Thanks in advance to whom will answer :)

Hello Simo,

welcome to the Nord User Forum!

Sample and program are two different kind of things, which do you mean?

A sample contains a specific sound file, created from a Wave-file, and can be used in different Nord instruments as long as they have the supported format. Your Nord Electro 5 supports the same sample format like the Nord Stage 2 which means you can load a sample from a Nord Stage 2 into your Nord Electro.

A program is specific to the instrument at which it has been created, and contains all settings of the instruments. This cannot be shared between different instruments, you therefore can not load a program from a Nord Stage 2 into your Nord Electro 5.

Hi Hervshahn

Many thanks for your quick reply and for clarifications :)

For sample compatibility ok, this is fully clear now!
About program one: is there a way (a software, a tool) to see the samples and settings contained in a program developed for NS, and therefore try to reproduce it on NE?

As Mr_-G- said there is no tool, the only way is to load the program into a NS2, check all parameters manually and write them down... if you find someone with a NS2 who is willing to do this. And even then you probably won’t be able to re-create it in your NE5 depending on which kind of program it is because of the very different hardware architectures, especially when it comes to the synth section.

Can you let us know which program you are looking for to use on the NE5? I have a NS2 and can look at it when I have time and am back to the studio.

Hi both

I was looking at this discussion, where it has been posted the song Rebel Yell with programs made for NS
nord-stage-2-programs-ns2p-ns2pb-files-f15/billy-idol-rebel-yell-t10269.html#p68698

I later found a sample/program for NE5, after a deeper check suggested me by another user which replied to a topic I had posted in Nord Electro program section, but if possible I was anyway intersted in understanding how the one developed for NS is built.

I do appreciate your help and support, thank you very much!!

Hi Simo283,
Here's an export of the Rebel_Yell NS2 patches you refer to, which may help you recreate them (note that the sample numbers/names may be incorrect as everyone has different samples loaded on their NS)

Hi Gordon,

saw your exported documentation of the patches above and the Africa_TOTO patch in the other thread - may I ask you how you create this? Is it fully manual and you enter each parameter into a file (Excel originally?), or do you have any kind of software which support you on this?

I think Gordon uses its own tool which decodes nsp2 files.
It seems to be a post used to induce curiosity of forum users on this tool: you are the first one ;-)
Gordon's tool can be very useful for those who want to migrate from NS2 to NS3 or to recreate ns2p patchs from this forum in NS3.
I was aware of this tool because I was thinking to do a similar one for NS3. But reverse engineering of such a format is a lot of work (developer are often lazy).
Reverse engineering of npno format could be more useful but without trying to start I think it should be almost impossible. When we see Nord product quality, I cannot imagine that npno format is badly designed especially concerning hacking of samples which is Nord "gold mine".

That’s what I was thinking about as well, and am therefore very interested in how Gordon does this ;-)
