salt air environment / corrosion

Postby keyboardcat » 10 Nov 2018, 23:53

I will soon live on a boat and am curious if anyone has suggestions on how to protect against corrosion due to salt air. Would you open up your keyboard and spray it with something like FluidFlim (lanolin based) or other anti-corrosion spray? Or use dielectric grease everywhere metal is visible?

Be prepared for the fact that the pots and rotary encoders will slowly become internally corroded and begin to malfunction after a time. This happened to my NS2 mainly from gigging at a marina for four hours every other Sunday for ~4 years. That's about 100 gigs or 400 hours total time. As a live aboard you'll have that much exposure in less than a month. Keep it in a milspec case when not in use...

Good luck, Bless, Pablo

Maybe keep it cased in a cabinet with some desiccant material, like those little silicon bags only more. People buy larger amounts to keep in their gun safes.

I don't think there's a way to beat salt air corrosion on a keyboard. If it were me, I'd go the other direction: buy cheap used boards and expect to toss them frequently.
I think I have gear issues ....

Aim for high weight/price ratio for a constant supply of spare anchors.
