Re: Pairings With Nords?

Guys, I went 'balls to the wall' and got a Kronos 2 61 key and a Montage 7. I rather have too much than not enough.

I have the Montage as the bottom board because of the boot time. I can play my bread and butter sounds on the Montage while the Kronos is taking it's sweet time.

At the end of the day, the Kronos is a monster, and I plan to take on the challenge of figuring out how to harness its capabilities, along with the Montage.

Thank you ALL for everything.

That should be a great combo! The Kronos even gives you clonewheel organ and VA synth similar to what the Nord Stage 3 would give you (albeit with a less immediate control surface), which is nice since those are the specific areas where Yamaha is weakest.

One thing to think about might be to swap the Montage 7 for a MODX8, to get the better piano action. Yes, you lose some features/functions as I detailed in the previous post... but as it happens, you get a bunch of them back in the Kronos 2 anyway (lots of storage space for custom samples, more extensive seamless sound transitions if needed, aftertouch, ribbon, assignable outs), and again, you don't lose any Montage sounds by going to a MODX. That said, if you're perfectly happy with the feel of playing piano on the Montage 7, then really, there's no need to think about that change except to save either money or travel weight.

ETA: p.s. - remember that MIDI also allows you to play Yamaha sounds from the Kronos, and vice versa, in case that might play into your thoughts about which Yamaha action you want, since you can use that action not just for Yamaha sounds, but also for Kronos sounds, i.e. if you find you like the Kronos pianos better.
