Re: Next version of MacOS probably doesn't support Sound Man

Finally, signs of life in Stockholm! I'm pleased to see the acknowledgment of the 32 vs. 64-bit issue, but very worried about the timing of rolling out the new Mac software. 64-bit apps have been a thing in the Mac software world for years, and waiting to release their updated apps until just before their 32-bit apps stop working (which has already happened for everyone running 10.15 Catalina) seems a bit reckless.

Show of hands: did this bug fix release fix a bug you reported?

Wait, you’re running a beta of an operating system on a machine that is required to manage your Stage keyboard, and CLAVIA seem “reckless” for promising to release software that supports the OS in time for when Apple releases it???

WTF.

Analogika, recall from a few pages ago that I said I knew what I was doing when I entered the OS beta program. If I NEEDED to keep adding/deleting sounds from my Nord, I wouldn’t have done something risky with my Mac that’s older than my Nord and yet more future-proof. Newer additions to the sound library aren’t even compatible with my keyboard.

A 64-bit app from Clavia would have run on my Mac years ago. Waiting until the last minute rather than doing something Clavia could have done years ago is reckless, yes. Prioritizing a bug that causes files with the same name to be overwritten (the scope of this recent app update) instead of a bug that breaks the app entirely is reckless.

Did this app update help you?

Switching to 64 bits is not “fixing a bug”. The application continues to work fine with every single version of OS X/macOS Apple has released since 2009.

You have literally ZERO idea why they haven’t released a 64-bit version. Perhaps they are rewriting stuff. Perhaps they’re preparing the next major update with a parallel release on iOS, and they’ve been waiting since the developer tools and Apple’s future on iOS/macOS joint development was too much of a moving target until
Just two months ago? Perhaps they’ve been hard at work on a rewrite for three or four years, and rather than release it early, they’re using every last bit of time to test it until the moment they HAVE to release it because they older version stops working?

While I’m not affiliated with Clavia other than as a user of their products, I find it offensive that people are constantly trying to characterise them as idiots, for any number of perceived reasons.

@emelenjr: there is no bug as the Nord Sound Manager app runs properly on the latest official (non Beta) Mac OS + while you are allowed by Apple to try (at your own risk) the beta of Catalina, at the same time you are not part of any Nord/Clavia beta testing program (so you have no access to any beta of 64 bit version of NSM). Fact.

maxpiano

“X app doesn’t work in Y scenario” even if it’s an edge case scenario, is indeed a bug.

For the record, Clavia invited me to be part of their beta testing program. There’s no software to share with me yet, but I've been invited to participate when there’s something to test out.

Not at all, it is called "incompatibility" and what you call scenario Y does not yet exist as official at the time of the app issue, try again... or should Clavia and all other app developers have their apps ready also for the "after Catalina" versions of Mac OS...?

It's not a bug when Nord has not yet released a working version for an OS that is still in Beta. Relax, it'll happen in good time.

The most recent version of Sound Manager for Mac, released this week, is not compatible with the most recent version of the Mac operating system, which, yes, not everybody has today and not everybody will have when Apple promotes it with a big banner and a press release. It’s irrelevant that Apple hasn’t populated it in everyone’s Software Updates for downloading and installing. Software beta versions exist for a reason. Just because it’s not your problem doesn’t mean it’s not a problem to fix. If you want to split hairs and argue the semantics of bug vs. incompatibility, go for it.

Operation system betas exist for a reason, right. One reason is to have a huge base of testers helping to find bugs in the OS before the final version is released to the public. OS betas also exist to enable ISVs like Clavia to develop their software application or this particular OS version and be ready with it when the OS version is officially released to the public. There is absolutely no obligation for any ISV to release their software to the public BEFORE the targeted OS is publicly released. If some ISV provide this at the beta stage they might do it for good reasons but if they don’t provide it they may do it for good reasons as well. Up to now there was no problem in running Clavia’s software on the current public releases of the supported operating systems. If a new OS release like Catalina is released to the public and Clavia’s software does not run on this OS anymore we then would have a reason to complain, but as long as this does not happen any kind of criticism about this non-availability has no legitimacy
