Re: Herbie Hancock Rhodes Sound?
I'm rather new in Nords - was that really a per-key morphing? Each key's velocity controlling that one note's morphing? Wow.

Re: Herbie Hancock Rhodes Sound?
Yes. Velocity is always per key anyway. Each key's velocity already controls that note's volume, after all.

Re: Herbie Hancock Rhodes Sound?
So, does anyone have a concrete setup for my Nord Piano 4? I don't really know anything about velocity.

If you can play these songs, it doesn't matter much what sample you use. Just load up EP8 Nefretiti, add some chorus and a little auto pan and play and enjoy the music.sussko wrote:Chameleon, ButterflyEumel wrote:He has several sounds for different songs. Please name a song.

Practice and try to play like Herbie!sussko wrote:Have some of you guys already tried to mimic the typical 70s Hancock Rhodes Sound? Like which EP is used and what effects and other settings can be applied to get a very similar sound?
I think EP2 (suitcase mk 1) was made to mimic the typical 70s sound Herbie used. But for me it sounds a little thin. The Nefertiti has the right attack, but i don‘t like its decay/sustain. Way to short, espacially in the upper range.

Add compressor to get more sustain (it’s how it was recorded), and some distortion to get a bit of crunch.daniel70 wrote:Practice and try to play like Herbie!sussko wrote:Have some of you guys already tried to mimic the typical 70s Hancock Rhodes Sound? The Nord giveth; the Nord taketh away…

Re: Herbie Hancock Rhodes Sound?
Sure you do. We're just talking about how, when you hit the key harder (with greater velocity), you get a sound that is louder and different in tone. Now you know pretty much all about velocity.sussko wrote:I don't really know anything about velocity.
There was just a little side discussion about how the Nord (unlike some other boards) does not let you choose which piano sounds you want for your hard strikes (high velocity) versus your soft ones (low velocity), you only get those distinctions as Nord provides them. Since that sidetrack was about something you could NOT do on a Nord, you can ignore that in your pursuit of your ideal Nord Rhodes sound.

Re: Herbie Hancock Rhodes Sound?
Sussko you would probably find Herbie pretty happy with any of the Rhodes samples, but I definitely would recommend trying the recent higher size files. I saw Maxpiano doing a great job on Youtube demonstrating them and he was impressed by the improved dynamic range and musicality. I loaded them all and retained ones I liked the best. The Nefertiti works for me but I still prefer the original, my opinion is the larger sample does not play as well dynamically when soloing single lines over the left hand, it seems to flatten everything out. You can of course spend too much time playing them in isolation, when you get in a band unless you cut bass and push the mids it won’t project. That EQ setting might sound pretty horrible in isolation, but sit great on bass and drums. When the DX7 came out you can see Herbie playing one on Youtube in the mid 80’s. So I sometimes layer my TX7 and it is really strong, a purposefully a bit retro!

Maybe you are talking about MeX (great guy, I like his demos), but that's not me (unfortunately)AndyG1955 wrote:I saw Maxpiano doing a great job on Youtube demonstrating them and he was impressed by the improved dynamic range and musicality.
