Control Pedal affecting external keyboard

Postby Rufus8102 » 29 Sep 2015, 02:06

Hi all....I recently posted this in the Electro Forum, but haven't received any responses other than from Pablo,so I thought I would post it here too. I recently purchased a NE5. I previously had a Stage EX (which I'm currently selling if anyone is interested). I also have a Yamaha Motif 6. I used the Stage as my main keyboard and had it midi'ed to the Motif. I had 2 FC-7 pedals...one into the Motif and one into the Stage to control organ volume only (I used the organ swell input). I was able to use the pedal going into the Motif to bring in strings, pads, etc when playing either keyboard. With the NE5, there's no organ swell input...only a control pedal input. So now, the pedal going to the Motif works perfectly, but the pedal going into the NE5 also controls the volume of the Motif. Is there any way to have the Nord control pedal work for only the NE5 and not the Motif? It has me baffled because I have the Control Change Mode set to OFF in the midi settings, but it still sends volume changes to the Motif.

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Steve

It seems from your case that the Control Change Mode setting doesn't include Controller data sent from the control pedal in the list of things affected. Hopefully Pablo or Nord can confirm whether or not this is the case.

I've looked through the manual very carefully, but I can't find anything else that might do the trick.

Your best bet might be to approach the problem from the other end and see if your Motif can filter out the unwanted data, or at the least, disable sounds from responding to it.

Worst case scenario, you might have to buy a MIDI gadget to filter out the data, but that would require the gadget plus extra cabling, which might be a bit clunky.

MIDI Solutions are the go-to company for these kinds of gadget. Their Event Processor includes filtering out MIDI data as one of its functions, and I'm pretty sure that it would do the trick. Be advised that you would need to use its power adaptor. MIDI Solutions products are designed to draw their power from the MIDI signal, but that does not work with all companies products, including unfortunately, Nord.

Some other ideas: Is the Motif receiving in OMNI mode? (that is responding to any channel?) Did you check with a MIDI monitor programme what exactly is the Nord sending out?

Maybe try also:
MIDI

7 - PROGRAM CHANGE MODE affects how the
Nord Electro 5 handles Program Change MIDI
messages. Possible settings are Off, Send,
Receive or Send/Receive.

Set both 6 and 7 to off. Not sure if this will fix your problem it but it stopped my local adjustments from doing random things to my LogicProX settings. I probably could have mapped it in LogicPro too but I have a controller keyboard I use for non-electro stuff. There are also times when I want to record midi instead of audio so I can do things like quantize and automate because I kinda suck at keyboarding some days.

ProgChng is about changing program/patches, does nothing to the Ctrl Pedal...

Looks like you are correct... it was the other one. If I touched the equalizer gain, it would start recording. weird. I guess I need to map the electro.

Okay, I've been running some tests. With a Yamaha FC7 connected to my NE5 (properly configured for FC7), articulating the pedal causes an outgoing data stream on midi cc#11, expression. For reasons unknown, your Yamaha Motif6 is choosing to respond to this data stream on this channel and cc# by changing volume.

I have downloaded the Yamaha manual and spent some time with it. I should preface this by saying that I owned and played a Yamaha Motif Rack ES for about a year when I got this Nord job in March of 2010. This little exercise is an effective refresher course in how much I hated working with that Yamaha design, those manuals, that software. I'm sorry, but what a nightmare. There is no visible Midi Implementation Chart or mention that I can find addressing the subject of incoming midi cc data. Perhaps my eyes glazed before I got through the 300+ pages of the manual. See no evidence of such a chart in the Table of Contents, though...

Midi cc#11 is reserved per midi spec for expression, and organs commonly use that for swell. I do not believe that there is any good reason for the Yamaha to be responding the way it is, but it is not possible to disable the outgoing midi data stream from the Nord, so it will be necessary to teach the Yamaha to ignore it or insert a device in between the two which will filter this data.

Any Motif geeks around here wish to offer two cents about how to disable reception of this data by the Yamaha?

Bless,

Pablo

There' s only two way to solve the problem:

1) in the yamaha you' ve to disable the control of the pedal for the desired sound;
2) Nord has to release an update with the possibility to disable control pedal outgoing midi message, like in the nord Stage 2.

i have a very similar problem. THE MOXF and nord but only one foot controller volume pedal.

However, I haven't been able to use ONE pedal controller for both keyboards MOXF6 on top and midi out to NORD EP5. The pedal works on the moxf but on the nord hp5 I can see the midi light when I move the pedal attached to the moxf6 but it doesn't affect the volume . SO I have been able to use the knobs to control the nord volume from the moxf in master mode. I think this has something to do with the way MOXF Yamaha calls BIASing the volume control.

I wonder if there's such a thing as a splitter cable so I can use the one pedal for both keyboards?
