Decisions, right? Welcome to my world :)

The two pairs of 8's was driven by the venue. Two distinct audiences on each side, with a big pool in the middle. OK, fine.

I use 12's and similar for long-throws in big spaces. By that metric, I have all sorts of long throw options in my arsenal: legacy K10s and K12s, a pair of fearsome QSC KW-153s, and so on.

The one odd duck in the arsenal is a pair of Fulcrum Acoustic FA-12acs. Way beyond most folks' ability to score, but -- man -- super powers abound. Even in near field, the coax magic juju brings unique game.

Please note, I didn't use them on this gig.

A small thumpin' filtering sub is almost mandatory these days. Check out the Yorkville stuff if you don't want to spend for the RCFs. Yorkville brings game at their price point, although sometimes hard to find.

Just sayin'? No way I'm going to sell my K8.2s anytime soon. Just too amazing.
I think I have gear issues ....

Well, we just confirmed a bunch of new gigs and it looks like most venues either have their own system or we will need to contract for something that’s beyond what we would want to transport, set up and have the requisite backup equipment in tow. So, while we won’t be running our own sound or doing a mass conversion to IEMs, this whole conversation has still been helpful - even if only to facilitate the discussion of stage volume and the importance of getting our monitors correct during sound check. Still excited to be playing in stereo through the Key Largo and K8.2s. What a great setup for home, practice or stage. I have no doubt that IEMs and “silent stage” concept would be great, just may have to wait until 2019 and see where we are then. Thanks again.

Yeah, sometimes it takes a while to get where you need to go. And the K8.2s are no slouch in that category.

But now after maybe a half-dozen gigs with IEMs and no stage monitors, there's no going back. The guitarists are still bringing their amps to gigs (but not rehearsals), and keep them turned way down. Not exactly "silent stage" as there's a live drummer.

Before long, that too will cease.

And I'll be selling a pile of PA gear before too long.

When we play gigs where sound is supplied and we are a solo act or headlining if possible we will bring our own full stage/IEM system including mics, stands snakes and we travel with a splitter if needed. Most of the time its just easier to deal with our own gear. Faster setup, better on-stage sound, much more repeatable.

Granted its not always practical to bring our gear so we will work with what is provided, but in the vast majority of cases we are better equipped than most small to mid-size sound companies.

We run 4 stereo IEM mixes and 1 floor wedge mix across 18 channels.

save your hearing, use iem's and keep the volume reasonable. loudness is a cover for bad sound.

+1000000, I cannot remember how many times I was about to leave a band that had asked me to joined but anytime I decided to work on the Volume/Loudness part, well, way better....
Funny: "My guitarist in my first band has just sent us an email complaining that, after having seen his orhtophonist, he was about to loose his hearing and wanted to play at way lower volume....". Well, they all have already lost their hearing, I'm the only one who can hear the feedback when it's above 10.000 hertz....

@Cpholiis, pm me when you will be selling stuff, not sure I could keep up with your high end stuff but for some singers who praise their sm58 versus an AKG C535 or even an Blue Encore 300 that I propose, some old QSC will be way enough....for monitoring, or even FOH.
Sincerely

I totally agree and would love to get to that point as well. I’ll likely start off with trying IEMs myself and show how easy and beneficial it is to the rest of the band. The positive part is that the conversation has begun and I think that after a few more gigs, there will be a growing sentiment to take more control of our stage/monitoring setup. There will be some barriers such as cost. The lead singer, guitarist and bassist have invested in wireless for their mics and instruments, so they would probably want wireless IEMs as well ($700 for a decent wireless unit?).

It may take some time, but we will get there - and I’ll be back here asking for recommendations on equipment. :D

For anyone that sings it should be real revelation to try out IEM's.
I remember my own hallelujah moment when I dialled in the mix I wanted with the others panned out and myself in center, and hearing everything crystal clear.
Like going from playing from inside a barrel under 1 meter of water to actually hearing everything.

But I'm also a bass player, and if I wouldn't be singing I'd still prefer having my own amp as monitor.
That's a more physical experience, and hearing the other stuff crystal clear isn't as important to me when only playing bass.

So there's no universal right or wrong.
To some band members there are personal gains that should make them easy to convince, but to other band members I think the only argument is "for the greater good of the band", but they'll be stepping out of their comfort zone to do it.
The greater good of the band should be more important, but it's not fair to expect hallelujah's from everybody.
