QSC K8.2 problem

Post by HalfSwede »

I have been using a pair of QSC K8.2 the last couple of years for my Electro 6HP. They have been excellent. I use at church and church gigs as PA for duo playing mix of worship songs/soul. I have issue when left hand playing Fender Direct bass with speaker rattling/resonating with just 3 or 4 notes. Not issue for organ or piano bass at high volume. Worse on stands. I use https://www.thomann.de/gb/millenium_bs_ ... d_base.htm. One speaker worse than the other. Tried to make sure everything damped as much as possible, and case screws tight on K8.2. Does this sound like they are damaged or am I expecting too much of these small powerful units? Anyone else have similar experience?

Can't help - but should be fine for bass. I've used mine as FOH in small venues, and sometimes as a bass monitor too.

Make sure all parts on the unit are attached correctly (EDIT: meaning all screws are tight, no part is loose), and check with your retailer / manufacturer, if the warranty still covers this issue.

Thanks for feedback. I did check all screws tight. Found it is still within 3 year warranty but unfortunately repairs are taking 3-4 weeks and I have a gig end of the month. Will take it easy for this and then have them assessed afterwards. I have some old passive speakers and power amp as backup. The K8.2 are such a great solution for my needs so hope resolvable. My old Peavey speakers from 30 years ago are so bulky in comparison!

Have you tried removing the grill? One of my old K10's started buzzing on low notes and I discovered the grill had been slightly dented - enough to barely touch the enclosure. I removed the grill to inspect it and noticed that the buzzing stopped. Straightening the grill fixed the problem. If the grill is straight and all external fasteners are tight I'd suspect something is loose inside the enclosure.

Thanks for tip! Just tried to remove grille now. It does not come out easily. Found service manual and seems held firmly in place by gasket. Not confident to take it off, especially pending warranty assessment. No sign of dents. I think something more internal has come loose. Helpful to know others have experienced the buzzing and curable.

I am sorry to say still not resolved buzzing problem when playing bass notes around A below middle C. Most pronounced on bass guitar sound such as 109 Fend Direc Prec. Occurs on both my K8.2's although more pronounced on one. I took it to Audio Related the authorised QSC service repair company as warranty repair. Same issue when I got it back (they thought they found lose wire) so this time when I went back I took my 6HP to test in their workshop. Second time round they thought they had found problem, and could see XLR latch buzzing, and removed it. All hopeful problem solved I tested again at their workshop but same problem! The engineers were genuinely perplexed. They stripped speaker down and tested all ways with my 6HP, but could not resolve problem. They said they would speak with QSC for advice. I said I chose the K8.2's as universally well liked by Nord players on this forum. After speaking with QSC they asked me to check if any other Nord players have experienced the same problem on the Forum. I would be grateful to know if anybody else is able to replicate the buzzing? If not they asked me to post the following question:

"Having discussed this issue with QSC in some depth there are some questions regarding the speaker set-up and use of the K8.2 with the other Nord keyboard players who are using the speaker without the effect you are experiencing.

Would it be possible for you enquire if they are using a particular DSP and EQ settings on the speakers and at what level do they have the volume pot on the speaker and keyboard output. I would also be interested to know if they are plugging the keyboard direct into the back of the speaker."

For my part makes no difference whether direct from Nord or via small Allen and Heather mixer I use, or at different levels on either Nord or K8.2. I use default preset on K8.2 as prefer flat sound from speaker and EQ from keyboard or mixer, but for example studio monitor one which takes some bass out makes no difference. Obviously I will press for replacement if they cannot resolve but agreed to check their question with you. Any feedback gratefully received.

There are firmware updates for the QSC K8.2
Are you up to date ?

You can tell the sound settings and the way to play so that I can reproduce your conditions on a NE5D through a K8.2 if you want.

Yes, actually they have had two firmware updates in the last year or so. Did QSC ask you that question?
